The' new net tanning tanks erected soms time ago by the street railway company Just north of -their power - house, are liberally patronized by the fishermen now, who say It Is the most convenient thing yet arranged. The fishermen call at the works at all times of the night, and It Is so arranged that they can get their nets In the tank and out again with but little trouble. Yesterday the 100-horse power boiler for the street railway power house arriv ed, end was transferred from the Har vest IQueen to the steamer O. K., and lat er taken to the railway company's dock at the povrer house. On Monday work will be 'commenced placing it in position, and ih about two weeks it Is expected It will be In readiness for use. This boiler will obviate the necessity of closing- dowr; noand)-then for repairs, -ns has been' the custom in the past. It. is probable that In the near future Astoria will have a first-class natato rlum, directly on the street car line, and supplied with hot, cold. -fresh or salt water. For some time Supt Newell, of the street railway company, has had this undfer contemplation, and together with the directors of .the company, has gone carefully over the . whole- proposition. Just east of the power house in Upper town is a vacant lot, 75x150 feet, belong ing to the street railway company. On this piece of property It is intended to construct a well-appointed natatorlum, with all the conveniences found- In the best establishments of this sort in the larger cities. The water will be supplied from the river, and heated to any tem-' perature by the exhaust steam from the power house. In tbe East, where these Indoor swimming resorts are very popu lar, various aquatic games are indulged in regularly by the patrons. Mr. Newell says that this tank will be large enough to accommodate any. thing of this' kind that its patrons may propose, and there will be nothing lacking to make it mod ern In every respect. BLACKMAILING SEEMS TO BE THEIR VOCATION. Over at Fort Canby on Tuesday night tha "New Cape Theatre'' will have a grand opening at which a large number of Astoriana.wllt be present, the steamer Mayflower having 'been "arranged for to convey the people to and from that place. The VTickePof-Leave Man," with all Its sensational effects, will be produced by the Fort Canby. Glee Club, and Judging from' an elaborate program Just received a big time is' expected. But the Bhow is only a part of the night's entertainment, for at the bottom of the program it is announced that a social hop and refresh ments will conclude the night. s festivities. Judge A. A. Cleveland has received ap plication for a charter for a'new lodge of Elks at Cascade Locks, and tea Dep uty Grand Exalted Ruler, Mr. -Cleveland will go to the- Cascades about the 16th and Institute the lodge. What might have been a frightful acci dent was averted yesterday during the noon hour by the presence of mind of the motor man on car No. s The car was running at its usual , speed down the grade between 8th and 9th on Commercial street and just as it reached the crossing a little S-y ear-old tot ran across the. track dlrcctly-In front of the ear. With a strength that threatened to snap the brake chain, and caused the wheels to A day .or two ago the Astorlan had an article regarding the lack of trans portation facilities to Alderbrook from the central portion of the city, and com. men'tlng upon It, Supt. Newell, of the street railway - company, stated yes terday that his company were an xious to go to Alderbrook, or even be yond, just as soon ts the people owning property .on either side of the new alley way connecting 42d with Bond street, are ready to donate 20 feet each side, making it a permanent SO-foot street. Conslder alng that the company would be com pelled to lay out a large sum of money In an extension of this kind, Mr. Newell thinks It would be poor Judgment to start in and construct a. rail way over an alley way that is liable, sooner or later, to be abandoned. The company has already figured on rails and other material for this extension, and just as soon as the alleyway Is widened Into a Btreet they will extend their line to the very limits of the city. By donating 20 feet on each side of the alleyway would not necessi tate the widening of the present struct ure, the only object being to make It a permanent , ftret,on which- tho com pany's poles could rest unmolested.
