Fulton Regarding; His Portland Trip Mr. Fulton Enthusiastic. Hon. C. W. Fulton roturtwsd yeateriiay mnrnlns from Portland w'here he has been in consuiltiaitlon with Major Mc Neill, receiver of he O. R. and N. Co., and the altjtomieys for that oorpo ration, regarding the rlgUt of way through their property on Upper Oom morcAal street. There has been con siderable duobt for gome time pest ns to itlhe attitude of he O. R. end N. management toward tiho Aatoria-Goble railroad, and there were not a few who were ready to believe that Major McNeill would attempt to crowd the right of way as far as possible off their property. It was only a day or two ago that Receiver MoNeWl returned to Portland from the East, and upon his arrival home Mr. Fulton proceeded to the motropolla and presented the oase. The result oannot help but prove sat isfactory to the people of Aatoria, and will do a great deal towards changing the views of many Howard that com pany. Yesterday morning an Astorian re porter called upon Mr. Fulton at his office in the Odd Fellows' block and asked him regarding his visit to Port land. He was very busy eit the time, looking over a 0taok of letters thait had accumulated during his absence, but he spared sufficient time to talk pleasantly of his trip and Its more pleasant results. "Tea," eald Mr. Fulton, leaning back In his chair, and ait the same time tossing the letters aside, I saw Mr. McNell'l and his attorneys, and iam happy to eay that Uhey made not the slightest opposition to the request for a right of way through their iproperty. It ls also worthy of notice chialt Asto ria has no more enthusiastic man re garding the proposed railroad than is Mr. McNeill. He wants to see the road built into Astoria, and hoped the peop'.e of this city would unite in their efforts to have the subsidy end rtsh't ot way deeds In readiness so that Mr. Hammond could make en early start. "On account of the O. R. and N. be ing in 'the hands ot a receiver it will be necessary to commence suit for the right of -way, but Mr. McNeill will not appear against the suit, and Mr, Joe Simon, who is attorney for the Farmers' loan end Trust Company, mortgagees of the O. R. and N., has also agreed to make no appearance In, the oase. "You see," continued Mr. Fulton, "there has heen a greet deal said in the past regarding the attitude of Portland's business men toward a rail road to Astoria. The impression has prevailed that Portlond, almost to a main, was jagainBt the congtmiotion of a line to itihiB cllty, but irf such has been the case in the past, I can safely say. Judging from my conversation with a number of Portland's promt nen't men, that it is a different thing now. I know personally ttot Mr. Hen ry Falling has gone out of his way several times recently to do a good turn In securing the rlghlt of way be. bween Atftoria and Goble. They seem to understand that the building of the Asitorla-GoUle road means an immense adtvanillage ewer the Sound, and is bound to benefit tiho Whole Columbia river country. "Mr. Hammond, with a party of gentlemen, among whom is Mr. Thoa. Oakes, of the Northern Pacific, will arrive in Astoria Saturday morning. He Is highly pleased at the manner in which the people of this city have taken 'hold of the work during his ab sence. He ls ready to commence the construction of the road Just as soon as the citizens of Astoria are ready wltih their subsidy and right of way deeds. Mr. Hammond will be here sev eral days and if matters can be ar ranged in time, there seems to he no reason why the conetrucrtkm of the road should not commence ibefore he leave3." "Can you say anything of Mr. Ham mond's irJterttloms regiardinig the Sea shore road?" asked the reporter. "Yes. You can state that Mr. Ham ti an J will operate the Setaahbre road :hls summer. While I am mot prepared to cay wtch authority, Kt Is imy im pression that -the Young's Bay bridge will be completed at an early day, and trains run into the city In ample time to accommodate the teach travel this season. There Is another matter thait Mr. Hammond is very much taken up with. He Is desirous of securing flrat-class hotel for Astoria, one that will be boitlh modern and a credit to the city. He looks for a great influx of visiting capitalists and business men during the next few months, and there should be a suitable hostelry for this class of travelers to stop ait. "There Is another thing I want to say." continued Mr. Fulton, 'nd that is about the good citizens of Astoria. I know they are earnestly working to make a success of this affair, and have already done wonders. But there are always a certain element that ls sure to pull the wrong way this sometimes through not having a clear understand in? of the situation but more often through selfish motives. I hope the pe-jple of Astoria will forget all past d inferences at this critical time and work wtth one object in view to keep UiJir word with Mr. Hammond. To do this they must get their deeds to the subsidy in readiness and the right of! way through from Young's bay to Goble. This don and all will go smoothly. PROFESSIONAL CARDS. H. A. SMITH DENTIST.
