Easter Sunday Saw Every Church With a Large Congregation. In the Various Churches the Music Was Excellent and the Decora- I tions Beautiful. At no church festival is the subject of niuaic considered of so great im portance las at Etifitpr. Not even on Christmas is there greater attention paid by the different church choirs to the character of the music rendered at the various services .Elaborate pro grams are always furnlnhed by the Catholic and Episcopal churches, but Sunday the d'.urchcs of Astoria, Irre spective of demominaition, made great preparation for Eadter services, and the various churdlies were decorated beautifully With sweet-scented flowers, Easter Lilies predominating. Likewise all dtmomlrreutions make a special effort to present good music on Easter. In this city some of the ohoirs were aug mented for the occasion, and some of them had the assistance of an orches tra In addition to the organ. Tills was esiieclally true of the Catholic church yesterday. At the first M. E. church, the Pres byterian, Episcopal, Congregatlonaa and Eaiptlist, especially fine, musical programs Wad "been prepared. Their renldiition adlded greatly to the impres slveness of the services and imbued the congregation with a higher devo tional senltimont. The character of the music on Easter Is, of course, of the most Joyous character, for It all typi fies the risen Christ and the comple tion of the d'ivlne scheme of salvation. It Is In gretait contrast with the sombre and wlerd attaints that are sung during holy week In the Episcopal and Cath olic churches. Astoria Is fortunate In possessing a large number of excellent singers who are hoard in the different choirs, and so there is no composition too difficult or intricate to he given a proper inter pretation by Astoria church choirs. As usual the churches were more crowded Easter Sunday than on other festival days. The sermons, as was t:ie music, were of exceptionally high order, and did not fall to Impress upon the congregation the great lesson of the day. THE FIRST FRESBYTElUAN. A'ppropriatte Services of a Most At tractive Character. The Easter evening services at the First Preshyterlan church were unuu ally well attended, every seat In the building being occupied, and a few of those present being compelled to stand throughout the service. The church, thanks to the kindness ! of members of the congregation, was most lwautifully decorated, with a pro fusion of lilies, palms, azaleas, and oth er choice flowers and plants. Promlenit arnongtho decorations was a cross, ar tistically formed of lilies which had been sent to Mrs. H. C. Thompson by relatlvfs In California.-. Of the large number present some few non-men hsrs of the congregation were attracted by th'- promise of a pplendid musical pro gram, and not one was disappointed, for seldom have Astorians listened to music of a higher order within the por tals of a church. Among the soloists Mrs. J. T. Ross deserves special men tion for her masterly rendition of "Easier Dawn," the mellow tones of her sympathetic contralto were never heard to belter advantage, while her -orrect conception of the requiremen's of the iplece left nothing to he desired. The chair had thoroughly mastered the wthims, and the several volcas blend ed to perfection. Mrs. C. W. Fulton, he leading eaprano, wasnot heard in 1 solo, tut her full, sweet and fltxlble oice among the choristers was a most ' -npoutant factor In making the pro 'ram 'the prominent success which it 'ndtouhtaMy was. A short but elo uent sermon brought the services to 1 close, and It may be eaid with safety at a goodJy proportion of 'those who I'ltemdod (before they left the sacr?d llflice, echoed the thought, "It Is good ir us to be here." And before Pilate gave his consent to ?onsign -the body to Joseph he required ?he certificate of the ceniturian to that effect. Then Nicodiemus and Joseph burled the body, having prepared it with myrrh and aloes. It Is altogether unlikely that such ipersons could have been deceived. (2) The fact -that Jesus Is risen The earliest written mention of the resur rection Is .by Paul. He learned the fact from Peter and .fames not more than ten, probably not more than six years, after the even; thus early it was the fixed ibelicf of the disciples. Easter services at St. Mary's Cath olic church were fooM alt 10:30 last Sun day morning, and quite a large con grregatlon was Tresent, among them being many strangers. The choir sang Millard's Mass In C In a creditable manner, doing ample Justice to the several sotos, duets, and choruses in the the difficult composition. Mrs. Finck sang an "Ave Maria," by the same author, at the benediction. Her superb soprano voice was never bet tier, and her excellent rendition of the inspiring selection was well and favora bly received by those fortunate enough to be present.
