THE GREAT WEST. A St. Paul Paper Gives an Interview of Interest to Coast People. (St. Paul Dispatch.) Robert S. Doubleday was at the Com. merolal club this morning, and refer ring to the recent Interview In the Dis patch, said: "It was with some surprise that I read in the Dispatch, a day or two since an Interview credited to a St. Paul business man in which the latter U represented to have spoken most disparagingly of the great Western coast country, and indeed to have painted It us anything else than what It uiily U. "With, utmost respect to the gentle man awd his opinions, it seems to me to be the worse postii'oie taste to at tempt tu dy ones kite iDy puamg an other's down. It Is not necessary. To admit too .trum concerning t'ne newer country of tne weal does not neees-zM-uy reneet upon jUinueaota any more tnan to auinowieUge iunueso.a to be a remaj-Kaoie biaie in many respectb rellecu upon ev YorK. "During tne past year I spent many months travelling .tnroughout the va rious secwions of tne Pacific Coast country from Mexico to uritisn Coi- uHiuia lor i!asiern publications. Ii was my pleasure as well as my duit to carefully observe conditions, anu anticipate to some extent tne probotou itles based upon resources and natur al advantages, for the country men tioned and the people It contains. Tht fact Is. that the Coast section Is s vast and so varied in its resources, Its conditions and its possib, iltles, that It is easy enough to find certain lo calities in it that will answer almoe any description. As a wnde, however, it is a truly marvelous country, teem ing with untouched wealth, wearing ar an uit.es the verdant splendor of mar velous fertility, (while indeed many sec tions are veritable garden spots, ely. siuma with which there are noni ol her to compare in the United States I found there localities of which mas be said that which cannot be statec truthfully of -any other section in America. The people were absolutelj content awd the grumbler was not ti be heard. "It Is true that certain of the large-, coast cities are not growing so rapidlj as they did; that, indeed, there is nc great activity In them. That Was in evitable, and lahe ieaaisei Ss obvious enough. Ninety per cent of the peopk who have gone to the coast country since the 'iboom days" of Kansas, Ne 'braslca and the Northwest were over were bent upon ibeing corner lot boom ers, land shanks, realty speculators, and sitting in comfortable offices 01 hotel parlors, 'making fortunes by qulok processes, catching one anothei in realty deals, and depriving each new comer of whatever ready capital he might have. As (boosting the price of corner lots, mere location values noes not create any real wealth, thl: bubble soon exploded. Had the peo ple who emigrated coastward devoted themselves to the development of th country, they mlgh't all be comfort able circumstanced, and their cltieo would have taken care of themselves, as they always will. "The chief grumlb'.ers, I may say th only ones, of the Pacific coast, ar. those who a few years ago were "makin;" a thousand dollars a week in real esitate Itransae.Uons, tout having killed the goose that laid the golden egg are mW obliged to live on the in ter-st of their suddenly acquired wealth wealth whi h, by the way, the. have secured without giving any tan gible return so far as I can see and they proceed to loudly bewail theii fate. "Of my personal knowledge then are scores of (people who have gon there wrth comimend'aJMe purposes some Judgment, and very limited capi tal, and are prospering exceedingly Indeed, contrary Instances are compar atively rare. The poorer people posi tively are not suffering there as they are farther East and the future of tht Pacific coast will make one of the grandest paqres In the history of Amer ican prosperity." "But evil Is wrough ly want of thought, As well as want of thought." By want of thought mothers allow daughters to become frail and puny. Over-study in girls Induces uterine dis orders and weaknesses, and blightt their future happiness as wives and mothers. Joined to proper hygienic care.
