Castoria is Dr. Samuel Pitcher's prescription for Infimts
and Children. It contains neither Opium, Morphine nor
other Narcotic substance. It is a harmless substitute
for Paregoric, Drops, Soothing: Syrups, and Castor OIL
It is Pleasant. Its guarantee is thirty years' use by
Millions of Mothers. Castoria destroys Worms and allays
fevcrishness. Castoria prevents vomiting Sour Curd,
cures Diarrhoea and Wind Colic. Castoria relieves
teething troubles, cures constipation and flatulency.
Castoria assimilates the food, regulates the stomach
and bowels, giving healthy and natural sleep. Cas
toria is the Children's Panacea the Mother's Friend.
Castoria.
"Castoria Is an excellent medicine for chil
dren. Mothers have repeatedly told me of its
good effect upon their children."
Dr. G. C Osgood,
, Lowell, Mass.
"Castoria is the best remedy for children of
Which I am acquainted. I hope the day is not
far distant when mothers will consider the
real interest of their children, and use Castoria
Instead of the various quack nostrums which
are destroying their loved ones, by forcing
opium, morphine, soothing syrup and other
hurtful agents down their throats, thereby
ending them to premature graves."

SWEPT BY A CYCLONE
Of approbation to the pinnicle of popu
larity, HoHtetter's Storrtaoh Bitters
has acquired a commanding position,
which has occasionally made a bright
and shining mark for knaves, who seek
to olst upon the community spurious
compounds in the milse akin to that of
the real article. These are mostly lo
cal bitters or tonics of great impurity,
and, of course, devoid of medicinal
efficacy. Beware of them and get the
genuine Bitters, a real remedy for ma
laria, rheuinaitlsm, kidney trouble, dys
pepsia, nervousness, constipation and
blllousnt-ss. Physicians of eminence
everywhere commend the great lnvlg
orant, for both its remedial properties
and Its purity. A wlneslassful thrice a
day will soon bring vigor and regular
ity to a disordered and enfeebled sys
tem. One-fourth of the visitors to tha
New York Metropolitan Art Museum
during 1S94 congregated there on Sun
days. "But evil Is wrough by want of
thought,
As well as want of thought."
By want of thought mothers allow
daughters to become frail and puny.
Over-study in girls Induces uterine dis
orders and .weaknesses, and b'.lghts
their future happiness as wives and
mothers. Joined to proper hygienic
care. Dr. Pierce's Favorite Prescription
Is a priceless remedy In such ailments,
Its value be"omlng even more apparent
every year. Using It, the wan. debili
tated school girl gains color, flesh and
spirits, losing those deathly headaches
tormenting backaches, languor, dejec
tion, and other symptoms of functional
Irregularities and nervous deMHtv. It
never harms the most delicate girl.

UJTDER THE VERANDAH.
I By Hugh Kal.
The present epidemic of deep sea
j captains In the vicinity of FUvel's
i dock calls up a few thoughts In con
nectlon with that .honest, gruff-voiced'
I class of men. All of them have the
' Captain Cut He iJok, and In many ways
; conform Ito that gentleman's well
' known characteristics. By the way
! how Is It that the nether garments
j of these skippers, no matter how trim
and smart the balance of ithelr rig, in
variably look two rlxes too large
Certainly it Is noit because they are
ship captains, for the same peculiarity
Is a distinguishing feature of Martin
Olsen's get-up. And Martin, as every
body knows, Is no ship captain. It
mutt be that the poor, unoffending
pants (forgive me, ladles) never see the
light of day after they leave Llvenx
till they arrive at this port, and arc
then ruthlessly dragged out of Bnug
fitting lockers with creases down the
front that would drive a Portland dude
to despair. The life of a ship's mas
ter ashore in Astoria is a short ana
a merry one. He stei out of hit
boat, makes a bee-line for the ofllci
of his consul, and after he leaves tha"
functionary, acts for a couple of houre
as If he were a criminal seeking to get
away from a posse of detectives. But
in reality he has broken none of the
commandments. He is only seeking to
throw off he track three or four rep
resentatives of rival butcberlng estab
lishments. They manage to corner
him after a hot stern chase, however,
and he resigns himself to each In turn,
pormlalng all of them, .probably, the
trade of his ship as long as he remains
In port. Then changing Ills tack with
all canvas out, he steers for that ha
ven of refuge the stevedore's office.
Here he Is surrounded by a crowd of
cronies after. his own heart, and in the
animation caused 'by their sympathetic
string of remembrances, soon forgets
his troubles with ithe butchers, arid in
deed all the hardships of the voyage
he has just completed. For a time he
Is the king of this little maritime court,
and from his pinnacle he eagerly an
swers all sorts of questions relating
to the weather in this latitude and the
ourrent In that latitude, until the tech
nical vocabulary is exhausted and they
aM drift Iby common consent Into
yarns, miraculous and otherwise. A
long stroll, with a half dozen old sea
dogs, taking up all the available side
walk, and a pleasant evening dlnnet
together ashore, complete's the day's
program, which goes on until the tow
boat Is ready to take the skipper and
his ship to Portland. On hl3 return,
fully laden from up the river, he comes
ashore again, Joyfully renews a qualnt
ances, and after a hearty round of
Jollity,' hand-shaking, and a wee nog
gin of Barley Bree, just to five good
luck to the parting, is taken ho d ol
by the waiting tug, whirled down the
river, and with all sail Eet, begins on
the open ocean his long voyage for
home.
Already the breath of the salmon
season is in the air, and everybody
connected In any way with tha busi
ness is getting ready to toe the mark
when the law says "go." The can
nerymen are almost too busy tc
breathe and only eat In a perfunctory
manner, as though It was habit and
not necessity that drove them to tem
porary Inaction three times a day. One
or two of the sedate among them, by
a great effort, keep their pace on the
streets down to a walk, tut the ma
jority thrust aside any attempt at
dignity and break into a double nulck
as soon as they get into the air. Thir
course, while tending perhaps to Indl
gertiion and kindred evils, shows that
the railroad Is not the sum total o."
our worldly ambitions, and gives posi
tive proof that a bird In the hand lr
worth two In the bush. Notwithstand
ing the railroad In "futuro," cannery
men are keeping their weaither eye on
the Royal Chinook "In esse," and a
few thousand other citizens are doing
the same thing. Let us hope that nol
one 'but a dozen railroads will be run
ning Into Astoria before the grand
salmon Industry will be a thing un
known among us. In the dreary waits
for the band of steel, througn out
booms and depressions, It has been
our only stantlby. When we grow
into another Boston or Philadelphia,
some new Sunset Cox iwlll be found
advocating the erection, in the marble
corridor of our public library, of a tab
let and tas relief commemorating the
virtues of the Columbia river salmon.
