FOLD TO THE FRONT.
It would be an amusing turn of af
fairs, but one not In the least improb
able, If Colorado should be found, with.
In five years from this date, as dead
set against free silver and the silver
standard as It now Is for them. An ex
change says that the commercial ratio
between these metals has revolution
ized the mining Industry of the state.
Capital has been transferred from sli
ver to gold mining, and tJhe production
of the more valuable metal has risen
as rapidly as tlftit of the less valuable
ihas fallen off. If this Is continued a
little longer, It will result In enlisting
the controlling Interest of the state on
the side of the gold standard. And as
that la What determines the Colorado
view, we should have a community
earnestly bent upon preventing legls.
latlon which should diminish the dig'
nity or value of its principal product.
There are 'hints of this already In
the tone of public opinion in the state
Some of the papers that have been
most bitter In the battle of the stand'
ards now soften their views and ajv
nounce that they have only been light
ing for a great principal; that, as to
practical consequences, the state would
really be better oft under a gold than
under a silver standard. One writer
figures out that Colorado's metal pro'
duct now amounts to about (12,000,000
each of gold and sliver. The fall of
prices which he assumes makes, as he
ays, the purchasing value of tlie whole
produot double what It would other
wise be. Thus, silver being maintained
on a parity with gold, and prices hav
trig fallen one-half, as he asserts with
bold Imagination, the value of Colora
do's metal Uo product in the market
Is equivalent to I.OOO.OOO. Now, If
there were frei coinage, the value of
the silver would be doubled, he says,
but prices also would Ibe doubled, while
the value of the gold would be un
changed. And therefore the value of
the product would be but $30,000,000 foi
purchasing purposes.
Of course we do not think It worth
While to even discuss theso fanciful es
timates. The Interesting point Is thr
effect that they are likely to haw upon
the Colorado mind. Tlio men of the old
regime, the owners of Bllver mines
and their attorneys, still represent the
state in all public capacities. They are
bent on repairing or building up thelt
private fortunes by forcing their pro-
duot on the people at double its actual
value. But there is rising a powerful
antagonistic commercial element. Capi
ItaJ invested In gold mining will aleo
have its say presently. It Is now modi
fying .the Intense- silver sentlmimt; and
as Its representatives acquire a larger
place In publlo life, Widen they are
bound to do, they will have something
to say about a monetary so-home which
.. .they are toM, would Wave the value of
their product, gold, precisely what It
Is, while doubling the prices of every
-thin else; that 1s, whk-h would dlmin-
