Bain, appeal from the Justice court. on the trap case which excited atten- tlon about a year ago. was set for hearing on March 6th. The case of S, a. D. The "Minerva" entertainment to be given tonight at the Uppertown school, house, Judging from its Interesting program, will be a successful affair. It is being given as a benefit for a worthy widow lady and will undoubt edly Ibe attended by a crowded house. Yesterday a petition signed by thirty-five residents of the Alderbrook school district, was presented to Mr. W. F. McGregor praying for him to tccept the nomination of school direct or. They set forth. In the petition that It is of interest to people of Alderbrook to elect a director who lives In that district ' A colony of enterprising 16 to 1 sil verltes have put In circulation In New York and vicinity about 81,000,000 worth of silver coin. The product Is not bogus, ' because it contains as great a quantity of pure silver as the gov ernment article. Captain risen has succeeded In get ting the schooner Albion off the beach In Sluslaw bay. A large timber was placed under the hull of the schooner and by the aid of an extra force of men the vessel was floated after two days' labor. Nearly all the hold-load of lumbr was discharged. The schoon er now has a load of about 75,000 feet. She was towed down to the Spruce street wharf, where she now lies. The Dunreggan does not look like the same vessel that came Into port on Monday, barnacled and rusted In a frightful manner. Now she looks trim and neat under a fresh coat of paint, and the barnacles are fast disappearing from the bottom by the action of the fresh water of the Columbia. Her decks have been scrubbed and polished and it would be hard to find a more tidy craft than the vessel now is. Mrs. Jefferson Davis has recently re. gained some property in New Orleans Which belonged to her husband be. fore the war, and was confiscated by the United States. The property was sold and the purchaser held It until 1892, When Mrs. Davis and her daugh. ters got possession of it. They are now asking the parish of New Orleans to remit the unpaid taxes for some years before they become its owners. According to the American Ship builder the large ship builders, Harland & Wolff, Belfast, Ireland, who built the Majestic and Teutonic, pay riveters 87.54 per week; pattern-makers $8.27 per week; platers the same, and fitters, $6.57 to $8. More than twice these sums are paid In this country, to the same trades, and It is no wonder that me chant ships are built abroad instead cf In this country, with Buch a wide dis crepancy in the cost of labor. The Victoria owners of the skins are now under bonds to the United States gov. ernment to the extent of $70,000, but apart from this obligation they have been at an actual outlay up to date of $8,000 In lawyer' fees alone. Yesterday In the circuit court the writ of review was denied In the cose of Denver and Medley vs. Clatsop county,. During the latter part of County Judge McGuIre's administration a petition largely signed by residents of the county near Jewell was pre sented to the county court, praying that a road be ojtened through proper, ty owned by Medley and Denver, glv. lng G. C. Baldwin an outlet, his place being In the rear of the first-named parties. The court granted the request and the road was surveyed and re corded. Denver and Medley asked the circuit for a writ of review, and an In junction restraining Boldlng from building a bridge across the Fishhawk connecting with the county road. Af ter listening to the evidence Judge Mc Bride set aside the writ and dismissed the case. PERSONAL MENTION. L. A. Loomls is over from Ilwaco. L. A. Loomls, of Ilwaco, was In the city yesterday. Merrlfield, of Seaside, was in the city yesterday. John W. Mlnto, of Sailem, came down Thursday, and has gone over to Clat sop Plains. Mr. S. Harri son, I would beg to state that the party fhat undertook to fill it in the first place was as fully experienced in the Ibusiness as Mr. Harrison, and would have succeeded if the weather and tides had been favorable as was ex pected, but during the wonted neap tides they had a heavy gale, and the highest tides that have been known for many years, and It washed out all that had been put in as well the nearly two-thirds of the original fill.
