On 14th street between Exchange and
Franklin avenue, a garbage heap is
causing a great deal of annoyance to

Yesterday the steamer Thompson did

The Greenwood Cemetery Association
yesterday received via express, a box
of "Champion of the World" rose
bushes, which are to be set out in the
Greenwood cemetery. The cuttings
came from the famous Philadelphia
florists, Burpee & Co. They will be
taken out to the cemetery today and
set out.

the walls of The Office bar room a
handsomely framed mirror, and when
the workmen finish the whole room

Monday Treasury Agents L. Cullom
and Moore, of Tscoma, and Burke,, of
Washington. D. C.i accompanied by
Collector Black, of Portland, arrived
In the city and made an Inspection of
the local custom house and bonded
warehouse. They found things In such
excellent shape that they took the boat
the same evening for Portland. Usual
ly It requires from two to three days
to complete their work at this port.

ly say that I did not experience such
delightful weather there as you have

Three of the steamer Mischief's crew
were under arrest when the vessel re
turned to Victoria, from her monthly
West Coast trip Saturday morning.
They were the cook, James Hunter
and two deck hands, Alexander Begg
and Charles Thorne. The three were
In charge of Constable McKenna, who
arrested them at Clayoquot for selling
whisky to Indians on two occasions.

Bonner, and Hammond. One hundren
and fifty notices of appeal have been
served, the attorneys of record accept
ing service in lieu of the numerous cli
ents. The transclpt In the case will
probably be the largest ever made in
the state. It will Include MO pages of
pleadings and 2,000 pages of evidence,
Floyd Osgood was arrested yesterday
and will now serve out his unexpired
term for vagrancy. It will be remem
bered that he was arrested a couple
of weeks ago on the charge of vagran
cy and sentenced ito 40 days In the city
Jail. After remaining In Jail six days
he was released on the promise that
he would clear out of the city for good
He left on the Telephone the same
eventing, and has been In Portland ever
Blnce. Monday he returned to his old
haunts and was soon taken In by the
police. He will do street work from
today on until his sentence Is worked
out.
The mysterious death of a 2-months-
old baby, the child of Mr. and Mrs,
F. R. Alexander, of Oak Point, Is at
present the chief topic of conversation
at that place. Saturday night the
mother retired with her baby beside
her and to all appearances the Infant
was In perfect health. On Sunday
morning Mrs. Alexander spoke to the
baby In her accustomed way to have
the 'little one notice her, but received
no recognition. She soon Ulscovered
that the baby was dead, but It was not
yet cold. She called her brother, who
at once notllieil the neighbors, but all
they could do for the little one was of
no avail. The cause of death has not
been ascertained up to the lust word
from there.

' CITY COUNCIL.
They Give Notice to the O. R. and N.
of Contemplated Street Improve-'
ments.
At a meeting of the city council last
night all the members were present
excepting Mayor Kinney, Messrs. Berg
man. O'Hara and Langworthy. On mo
tion Mr. Thomson took the chair.
The street committee and city at
torney reported on ordinance adopting
report of city surveyor on the exten
slon of James street. This ordinance
was real the second time and the
rules suspended and placed on Its final
pasoage.
An ordinance was then passed ap
pointing viewers of James street.
Councilman Welch then offered a res
olution which in substance was as fol
lows:
Whereas the Improvement of 15th
street has been defeated by the O.
R. and N. Company, that Receiver Mc.
Neill be notified that the council will
take immediate steps to have the north
end of said streets open unless the
company withdraw their objections,
and that the street committee Is here
by notified to put 'up a fence on the
north side of Commercial Btreet at 15th,
Mr. Welch then offered a resolution
that legal notice be given that the
council propose to improve Fifteenth
street. Council then adjourned.

Yesterday morning the Peterson
mayhem case was on trial. During
the day the jury visited the scene of
the assault. The evidence does not
differ materially from that of the Lind
gren case. Following Is the other busi

ters, Mrs. C. M. Celler and Mrs. S.
Danzlger, returned home yesterday.
Mrs. W. K. Scott, of Portland, passed
through the city yesterday en route to
North Raoh, where she will remain
until the regular summer exodus to
the sea shore.
Frank C. Baker and George Hlbbert,
of Salem, were in the city yesterday.
They returned to the metropolis last
evening. Mr. Baker was down saying
goodbye to his many friends In this
city, as In a short time, accompanied
by his wife, he will moke an extended
tour through Mexico and the Southern
States. He feels that after eight years
In the state printing ortlce he can stand
a little rest and recreation.
