Fifteen days ago she was off the Columbia and Pilot Staples went aboard of her. An easterly gale GRAND JURY REPORT. After stating that they had visited the various county Institutions and found them all right, the Jury had the following to say regarding the clerk and sheriff's offices: We visited the offices of the county treasurer, the county recorder, and the sheriff, and hearing no complaint against the management of these offices, we dls not have the books experted. We found the books and re cords In the recorder's office neat and systematically kept. We especially commend the clerk's and sheriff's of fices. The clerk's method of keeping the books and accounts of the county Is good and complete. Anyone can in a few minutes obtain any desired infor mation concerning the affairs of the county. The sheriff has a new form of tax receipt Issued to him. By means of tlhese duplicates he has a record of each piece of property upon which taxes have been paid. By this means, and the other books kept by lilm, he has a complete account of all taxes re ceived by him, together with the amount paid In cash, or in county war rants by each taxpayer, so that the amount of taxes collected! can be read lly ascertained without a long Investi gation of the different rolls. "We found tlhe county cleric, recorder and sheriff keep an account of all feeF received by them and that the same are turned over dally to the treasurer us by law required." MARVKLLOUS RESULTS. Hanthorn on Upper Bond street, and fully two hundred people enjoyed their hospitalities. The new building Just erected by Mr. Han thorn north of his residence was the scene of most of the gaiety, where scores of people tripped to the rythmic time of an excellent orchestra. The long hall was aglow with myriads of colored electric lights, and their soft radiance produced a falry-llke scene as It shone on the exquisite costumes of the ladles and the beaming counte nances x)f their gallant escorts. Tha walls were decorated with ferns and evergreens, bo arranged that the effect was pleasing. At the north end of the hall a large table contained liquid refreshments, while In an adjoining room a sumptuous repast was served at eleven o'clock Mrs. Hanthorn, the charming hostess, assisted by Mrs. E. J. Flnck and Mrs. H. D. Long, of Portland, received the guests. At 9 o'clock the grand march was started, led iby Mr. H. O. Van Dusen and Mrs. Hanthorn, followed by fully eighty couples. After dancing began, it was announced that those who preferred more quiet enjoyment to the iligiht fantastic, could adjourn to the residence a short distance away, where cards, games and social chat could be Indulged In. This invitation was accepted by many who soon filled the elegant rooms of Mr. and Mrs. Han thorn's home. Outside a large arch of evergreens formed an entrance to the dance pa vilion from Bond street, and a numbet of incandescent lights that peeped out of the green foliage made a pathway bright as day. Every precaution had been taken by the thoughtful host, that the guests should be put to no incon venience returning home and It was ar ranged that street cars run until the last couple had taken their departure. During the evening Mrs. C. W. Fulton favored the assemblage with a beauti ful song entitled "Sweet Heart, Sigh No More," Hy Lymes. Mrs. E. J. Flnck then sang Machero- nl's "For All Eternity," and In response to an encore favored the delighted audi ence with "La Styrlenne," from Mlg- non.
