The steam schooner South Coast left San Francisco yesterday morning for this port. Sturgeon fishing on the Columbia rlv er has (been the poorest this season in many years. The entertainment to be given by the A. F. C. on the 6th of March promises to toe a most delightful affair. Yesterday the Mendell was taken into the slip back of the 9th street dock, and at low tide tier hull thoroughly painted and her boilers washed out. The British Ship Linlithgowshire was chartered yesterday to load wheat for the United Kingdom, Antwerp, or Dun kirk. The Horse Shoe Chop House has been newly painted and opened up in first class style. Fifteen cent meals will be served. The steamer Electric is expected down from Portland this morning, and as soon as the material arrives she will be taken in hand by Joseph Leathers and given a thorough overhauling. The barge Maud S. came down from Young's River (Mills yesterday with a cargo of pulp for the Oregon City Mills, The cargo was discharged at the O. R. and N. dock. Irish Aristocracy Co. gave a natlnee yesterday afternoon to a large audience, composed almost ex clusively of ladles and children. They put on a good show, and when it came to tihe donkey act the audience laughed Itself almost into convulsions. ,On Friday evmlng the people of Sea side gave a very pleasant "Washing ton's Birthday Entertainment." The program contained nineteen events and consisted of readings, tableaux, songs, etc. People from Seaside and Clatsop Plains were in attendance. The slowest steamer afloat, the Sig nal, left out early yesterday morning witlh flour for Victoria. The cargo of flour la for the Empress of China, which sails on March 2d, and doubt is expressed by many who know the Sig nal pretty well, of her being able to reach her destination in time to catch the Oriental steamer. Adams Freeman: The hen is a cheer ful tolped. She will sit unruffled on a china egg for three successive weeks and then come out in the barnyard and serenely inform the farmer he needs a hair cut. Yesterday Joe Leathers, the Front street boat builder, turned out two handsome fWhboats and delivered them to the Scandinavian Packing Company. They are both built on clear-cut lines no handsomer crafts can be found among tihe boats of the fishing fleet. Work on the Jetty will resume on about ,the first of the monlfh and work will be furnished to the majority of the Idle mem. Only a small amount of work remains to be done, and after this season's work, the track will be taken oft and the quarters abandoned by the United States engineers. Last evening In front of the Astorlan there was a scene of Intense excitement during the bulletining of the senatorial light. The crowd reached nearly across the street and each bulletin was eagerly read by those nearest the board and called out to those further In the rear. At the telegraph office the same scene was enactej. The Wenona made the round trip to Deep IRver yesterday, and both ways had the largest freight and passenger list of the season. Her decks were piled high with freight as she went across the bay on her return trip, and passengers swarmed about wherever they could find a place to stand or sit down. A Big Audience Enjoyed a Most Excel lent Entertainment. Perhaps the most enjoyable and best appreciated entertainment ever given I by the Camera Club was the one which ; occurred last evening at the Odd Fel lows' Hall. The house was comforta bly filled with the very best and moBt Intelligent of Astoria's citizens. The views exhibited by the club were most beautifully and effectively displayed, and comprised many new features not heretofore attempted by the club. Many of them were revelations to Astorians, as Showing the wonderful progress made in photography and stereoptlcon science by the club. But the Jem of the evening was a series of beautiful views Illustrating the old ballad "Ben Bolt," during wnich Mrs. F. J. Taylor render ed the song In a pleasing and sym pathetic manner, while the views were exhibited. The program was pleasantly Interspersed Iby vocal music, "living pictures," and a parasol drill in which the following ladles kindly participated: Mrs. O. F. Hellborn, Misses Woods, Ilolden, Jewett, Rowe, Arndt, Tallant, Reed, Smith, and Woodfleld. At the close of the program the floor was cleared and a few hours of pleasant dancing Indulged in by those present. CHARMING MUSICALE.
