It has been a long time since saJmon
brought so high a price In the Astoria
markets as at the present time, owing
probacy to the scarcity of fish. Chi
nook salmon are selling at 15 to 20 centa
per pound In the city, and ,when a fish
erman makes an average haul he has
a neat sum of money at his command.
The present scarcity of fish leads many
of the fishermen to cast a dubious look
toward the opening of the April season.

The following business was trans
acted at the circuit court yesterday:
Decisions were rendered as follows: W
J. Denver and Wm. Mediley vs. Clatsop
county, oraer that citation Issue to I.
N. Foster, Peter Wage and G. C. Bold-
lng to appear and show cause one week
from today.
W. B. Hawkins vs. J. R. Morrison,
dismissed on motion of plaintiff.
W. J. Denver and Wm. Medley vs.
the county of Clatsop, motion to dis
miss writ of review, argued and sub
mitted. Astoria Is not the only place that Is
going to have a railroad boom this
spring. A. R. Graham, representing the
Coos Bay, Roseburg and Eastern Rail,
way and Navigation Company, adver
tises for bids to furnish 20,000 white
cedar ties, seven inches thick, nine
inches face and nine feet long, to be
delivered at the company's wharf at
Marshfleld, or a suitable place along
the road during March and April. As
no such number Is needed for repairing
It looks much like an extension toward
Roseburg.
Louis Martin, the ship builder, sent
to Portland yesterday for an asbestos
covering for the boiler of the little
steamer Bertie, which he constructed
last fall. The boiler, which Is known as
a "Porcupine," makes steam very
quickly, but when the boat Is In mo
tion the cold air makes it hard to
keep an even guage of steam. With
the asbestos covering Mr. Martin says
he can keep up a full head of steam
for any required length of time. He is
thinking seriously of constructing a
yaoht after the model made by J. G.
Stuttz. He claims that a boat con
structed on the lines of 1 this, model
will beat anything the next regatta can
produce.
THAT LIQUOR LICENSE.
Editor Astorian:
I have not the honor of being a mem
ber of the Chamber of Commerce.
Doubless that body IB doing itt utmost
towards advertising Astoria in the ad
vent of the railroad prospects. But I
have been wondering If it would not be
well for that body through its Immi
gration bureau, to attach to eaoh ad
vertising sheet a little tag explaining
all albout how our city council came
to grant the Casino liquor license. The
object of advertising Astoria, I suppose,
is to try to induce a desirable class of
people to come here, to bring their
families and to make their homes with
us a class of people Who will add to
the material and moral prosperity of
our city. It could be explained on the
tag that the Ave out of nine coun
fllmen represent the largest better ele.
ment In our fair city, and that their
repeated appeals to the city council iol
to grant the license came to naught
when our mayor called an extra session
of the council seemingly , at a time
when It was evident to him that four
out of nine would make a majority for
the Casino license. And it (could be fur
Oher explained that It was Just a stroke
f diplomacy, common out in the Far
West, on the part of our mayor, who,
when there is business of Importance
to be done, makes his committees con
sist virtually, as all good parliamen
tarlans do, of just three! members one
of them sick, one out of town, and
the other one to do the.nork.
The people back 'East Wuld begin to
wonder how four is a majority of nine.
Then reflection might lead them to
ihlnk there Is something In the "cli
mate" out here that sharpen's men's
wits; and you know climate Is a great
deal to the Immigrant. I hope the
Chamber of Commerce will take no
offense at this suggestion, but I Just
thought I would remind them that
there Is quite a large number of Asto
luns who, notwithstanding "climatic"
Influences .still think that the majorltV
of nine Is five. Very Truly,
