The Associated Press is absolutely sound financially, it is on a paying ba sis, it is constantly receiving accre tions to its roll of membership, and this membership embraces by far the larger number of the more prosperous and In fluential dally journals of the country. On an average .three accest-ionr. a week are made to this membership, and the list of papers which co-operate in gathering and dtsseminittng the news of the United Slate? and Canada is in Itself abundant and self-evident proof of the general character of the Associated Press and its standing, while its European and Asiatic con nections are such as to practically preclude successful competition with it on the part of the United Press. A good shark story has recently been given out by the ihouse of Grace Co., of New York, says the Marine Journal. It is in regard to a package of important papers that was lost overboard from the steamer Copac, at Rio Janeiro, a considerable time ago, when she was on fire at that place. The papers were given up for lost, but nulte recently some one killed a giant ehark at Terre de Bas les Salntes, and among the bric-a-brac In his Interior were the Capac's papers. They were turned over to a French resident, who turned them over to the British Board of Trade, which delivered them to M. P. Grace, of the firm's London house, who advised the people Ihere of their recovery. The fact that Terre de Bas les Salntes is up In the West Indies, some three thousand miles from Rio, makes the story all the more inter esting.
