Yesterday a man named Jacob John
son caught a dog belonging to Powell
Aho, of Unlontown, and taking it to
the dock in that neighborhood, tied a
nail keg filled with rocks to its neck,
and tossed It overboard. It is unne
cessary to say that the dog disap
peared with the heavily weighted keg.
Its owner, however, put In an appear
ance soon after with Constable Oberg,
who arrested Johnson and brought him
before Judge Abercromble. The case
was set for hearing on Tuesday at 7
V. m.

last evening.
Hon. C. W. Fulton, Dr. J. A. Fulton,
and Hon. John Fox icturned yesterday
from Salem.
Mr. George Bevls, of Portland, Is in
the city, a guest of Mr. and Mrs. Alex.
Campbell.
Dr. J. S. Bishop, of Portland, has se
cured rooms for offices In the Klnne
Block, on Commercial street.
Mr. and Mrs. Tallant and son Nat,
left last evening for California via the
Southern Pacific. Mr. Tallnnt will re
turn the latter part of this month, and
Mrs. Tallant and son will spend the
winter with friends In Los Angeles.

Court Street school; Mr. 'Jackson, Mrs.
Krager, Misses Nellie Nlckerson, Josle
Dealy, Laws, and Dickenson, of Cedar
Street School; Prof. Clark, Misses PoW'
ell, Campbell, Fossett, and McCue, of
Uppertown Buhool; Prof. Williams, Miss
Ground, and Miss Amy Powell, of
Aldei'brook; Miss Foster, of John
Day's; Prof, Brower, of Young's river;
Mr. Campbell, of Sklpanon; Mrs. Camp
bell, of Warrcnton: Mr. Case, of Sea
side, and Mr. Trescott, of. Clatsop.
Supt. Lymnn made a few Introduce
tory remarks, concerning the teacher's
work, and gave a general statement of
the ends to be aimed at in this lnstl
tuto.
A narrative of school work was then
given by tho representatives of the
various schools. The speakers were as
follows: Messrs. Wright, Jackson,
Clark, Williams, Brower, Campbell
Cane and Prescott; Mrs. Foster and
Mrs, Campbell.
President Chapman spoke of school

"Tho New Education," was the sub
ject of a dlsouBslon by Profs. Wright,
Olu, and Brower, and I're. ldent Chap
man.
The afternoon session was opened
ivlth an essay by Mrs. Busey, upon the
subject, "The Dynamics of History."
Discussion: "What Is Thoug'ht, and
How 'May It Be Developed?" T. J.
Jackson and C, C. Brower,
Esoay, "How the Will of the Pupil
may bo Developed," Miss Flora Weed.
Unsay, "What Is there In School Work
to Develop the Morality of the Pupils,"
Prof. Williams.
The institute was well attended, and
all seemed to enjoy and profit by the
papers and discussions.
The session today will be opened at
3 o'clock a. m as announced on the
program.
NUHALEW'S TIMBER.
The New Mill Will Have a Capacity of
50,000 Feet per Day-
Tho Nehalem Lumber Co., successors
to tho Nehalem Mill Co., will soon be
one ol the big lumber concern of the
coast, and this coming season will un
doubtedly note great changes In the
monthly output of lumber from that
river.
The new company will soon Ship to
their Nehalem mill new machinery
which will Increase the output to fully
60,000 feet per day. A complete box
factory will be a feature of the Im
proved plant. The mill to situated on
a pretty little Island, so that logs can
be brought duwn on one side and the
lumber loaded onto schooners from the
other side. For logs, the mill draws
from one of the greatest timber belts
on the eooKt, being principally spruce.
The supply is Inexhaustible, and at
the vrvsent time the mill has con
tracted for logs 90 miles up the river.
Mr. C. H. Callender. of Knappton, Is
manager of the new mill, and being a
practical lumber man, the future of the
new enterprise to practically assured.
The company owns about half the town
of Nolmlem. and in addition to the mill,
will conduct a large general store at
that place. The principal market will
be an Francisco, and the general of
fices of tho company will be In this city.
