The American Association of Masters and Pilots of steam vessels will hold a meeting tonight In their new lodge room, corner of Twelfth and Bond streets. Yesterday morning at 11 o'clock the funeral of the late Casper Baltes took place from PohVs undertaking parlors. The body was followed to the grave by a large concourse of people. The articles of Incorporation now come from Astoria. We hope all these projects on paper will be fully realized. Salem Is going to be connected, by rail with Astoria.-Statesman. Tilds on the construction of the water works system lhave not been fully gons over as yet. It will probably require several days of hard figuring yet, be fore a decision can be made. Monday Marshal Baldwin, of Ban Francisco, offered for sale the schooners Lily L. and the Emma and Louise; both were purchased by Ross & Hew lett, the former bringing $1,100 and the latter 2,90O. A dispatch relative to his bid on the water works bonds, was received by Clerk VartDusen yesterday from S. A. Keen, of Chicago. He has not at yet put up the $10,000 as requested by Mr. VanDusen. Last evening the following parties left up the river on the steamer Pottei : P. J. McC-owan, Martin Foard, O. W. Lounsberry and family, D. H. Welch, F. B. Ohoate, travelling freight agent of the Union Pacific, and C. F. Lester, representative, vho goes to Salem. On Thursday afternoon W. J. Denver, of iMedley, brought in seven ihead of cattle, the aggregate weight of which was 9,700 pounds. They were sold to Chrlstcnson & Co., and when placed on the scales they thought something had gone wrong with the weighing machin ery. Yesterday the iboard of school di rectors went to the Court street school house, and after carefully examining the walls of the yard, decided on imme diate Improvement. ' The Wenatchee Indians, of Washings ton, are protesting against what they regard a an act of vandalism and sac rilege committed by the Groat Northern. The workmen of the company recently blasted out sum big rocks near the Indian settlement, whloh were covered with hieroglyphics. The rocki were tho sacred recent of the Wenatdhee tribe and the inscriptions told of their chiefs and tattles, and the whole history of the people. The Indians are naturally Intensely Indignant. The city council met In special ses sion yesterday afternoon and listened to several parties who had suggestions to offsr regarding charter amendments. B. S. Worsley answered a number of luestlons regarding the fire department and warmly advised making it a paid department. He showed the council where the city would not, only be a gainer 'by several thousand dollars per annum, but Insurance rates would go down as well. It was finally decided to have the charter amended as pro posed, and a bill to that effect will be Introduced. There were several pretty hot arguments between several mem bers of the council. Considerable anxiety was caused last evening by the failure of the State of California to put In an appearance. She was due yesterday morning. An Associated Press dispatch from Elk, California, stated that two large steam ers, one in tow of the other, passed that point at 11 a. m., and were sup posed to be the Columbia and the Walla Walla. Later Agent Lounsberry received a dispatch to the same effect. The failure of the State to arrive today gives credence to the ibellef that It was the State and Columbia that were slgOited passing Point Arena yest'-rday, and that one of the vessels was dis abled.
