Teaching School is a Wearj,
Tedious Lot.
Pupils Drain Teachers of Nervous
Energy -There Must Bo. No De
lay iu Keeping Braiu and
Nerves Well Fed.
It Is a fearful trade tills teaching
school.
'A horde of restless, growing boys and
girls no wonder every day slowly
brings down the strength and nervous
power of the hard working school teach
er. "Tired as a school teadier" would ex
press, the ul'ter languor and collapse
that so few eaclape before the long
"weeks are over. , '
Of all the work open to girls and
women, sohool teaching seems to wear
hardest on brain and nerves. Each
day Is not able to make up for the
tremendous expenditure of the day be
fore, and bo there comes the usual re
sult of nerves hard worked but badly
nourished; the frequent sick headaches,
lo?s of strength, no color In Hps or
cheeks, low spirits, nervousness, and a
distaste for work.
What is nee-dful 4s at once pJaln to
every physician's eye. He says at a
glance: "tfour nerves want more food."
. Get some red corpuscles into your thin
bloodthe red corpuscles mean health.
Pdline's celery compound will cause
fredh, ruddy blood d circulate through
the veins, and will give an Impetus to
the weakened digestion. Thin people
with depleted or Impure blood, who are
easily attacked by lung disease and
chronic ailments, get strength and an
Increase of solid, healthy flesh- from
Paine's celery compound. It gives vi?'
or to weak mothers, and makes growing
children robust and hearty. Nervous
women, not actually sick, but never re
ally well, who -aTe a burden to them
selves as well as others, find Just the
help their system craves to restore them
to sound health and a happy frame of
mil nd. i
Healthy color, animation, clear eyes
and a well filled out frame, the Blgtns
of health that never fall, come from
the reasonable use of Paine's celery
compound. It Is peculiarly adapted to
correcting the depressing effect on the
eytitem of long hours of hard, trying
work In the school room, behind the
store counl'.er, in itihe ofllce, and wher
ever there Is a oonatant etraln on the
nervous and physical system.
AROUND COUNTY OFFICES.
The Offlrtals Are Cleaning Up, Prepar
ing for Busier Times.
There is not much going on around
the county offices just now, aside from
Ithe .regular routine df work. Judge
Gray spends most of hjs time In his
comfortable office facing the Street, and
ereterSailns anyone who might happen
In his pant of the building. He is tak
ing a greait deal of Interest In the road
question, and has recenltly been looking
iip various authorities on the subject.
County Clerk Dunbar has returned
from up the river, and Is again set
tled at his work. While away the? d -p.
uties were able to handle all the busi
ness that came along, 1 such, for In
t lance, as converting foreigners into
full-fledsred citizens, and issuing those
Innocent little papers thait never fall to
make two loving hearts happy. While
Itih'Ia department is not overcome with
official 'business, the clerk and Ms dep
uties have little time for looking out of
the windows. .
In the ehertfTs office business is not
as brisk Just now as Mr. Hare expects
' ito see It 'this itime next week, when
court opens, frut he and his deputy
are not ttdle. They are Itaklng advan
tage of the lull in business and getting
thwir papers straightened out so tha
when a rush strikes them ithey will
(have oil documents at their fingers'
ends.
County Recorder Gunderson seems al
ways busy. His books are up to date,'
and a sudden spurt in business would
not eaJtdh him asleep. His office Is
orowdrf from early morn till late In
the day with people who are anxious
to pour over the records, and It keeps
him on the move to answer all the
questions that are asked.
The Astorlen's Elk Creek correspond
ent writes that t would be utterly Im
passible to conceive, unless one was an
eye-witneyn, tire grandeur of the great
storm of Sunday last. The giant rocks
along the beach cowered under the aw
ful frenzy of the monster seas that
swept In from the southwest, and the
noise of the waves as they lashed them
selves against the rocks, sounded like
the repeated booming of great cannons.
For hours It was Impossible to even
walk along the beach, so high was the
anirf, and the n&us of drift that bad
airewn the beach from one end to the
other, was washed h'gh up on the sand
dunes. "On co." sald4he correspondent,
"I was Branding on the summit of a
joint about half way down the beach,
ar.d for three nailes north, could see
thousands of logs, 6ome of them being
fully 150 feet In length, picked up by
a great roll of the surf, and carried far
out into the boiling waters, as easily
as If they were so many straws. The
next Incoming sweU carried them far
up onto the beach, where they now re
main. It was the greatest storm ever
w4'-nuued on this beach. I was up to
the pi ice owned by Mr. Anderson, of
Portland, yesterday. He is having erect
ed a fine log house 20x36 feet, end it will
really be the finest aumnror house on
One Ibttieh when completed. We need
more men like Mr. Anderson down
here. They are a credit to any locality.
Th? combination ocean freight and
passenger steamers will not become a
thing of the past. entirely, but the time
is near when the distinctive ocean pas
senger steamer will be ommon enough.
It Is but natural that with steady and
enormous Increase In trunsrwbatlon the
ocean traffic should take on some of the
features of Hall road work, and freight
and passenger bueCness be carried on
in dlffjrent vessels. Upon very long
voyages this may not be done for years
to come, if ft really ever is, owing to
the comparativ e lack of trad e Ihat would
permit of the expense. Bat in .he North
Atlantic trade and in other directions
One change Is certain. The movement
Is eiean In the Increase and Improvement
of the purely freight steamer, and In
the decreasing space set aside for cargo
in ithe latest o f the first -class passenger
boats. The next move will be an- al
lotraenlt of room for express matter
only, and the passenger boat will then
be what her name implies. Whether
the purely passenger boat will be dl
Vlded Into two classes, one with extra
acoomtmoilitlona tat high rates, extra
speed, and answering In a measure to
a Pullman car, and the other of slower
speed, good acoommodlaltlons and rea
sonable fare is a matter of opinion yet
but 4f the travel across the Atlantic
keeps up 4ts steady increase, then fur
bher discussion of traffic may be ex
peated. New York Maritime Register.
The Japanese apply one of their
many "pretty ways" to ithe launching
of ships. They use no wine. They
hang over the ship's bow a large paste
board cage full of birds, fend the mo
ment the ship is afloat a rrtan pulls
i string and the cage opens and the
birds fly' away, making the air alive
with music and the whirr of wings.
