itentiary, by shooting himself through

of penitentiary directors have been
wrangling among themselves, and last

that Lawyer Height was peddling hit,
notes on the street. He hastened back
to this city, arriving here December
3rd. He found Haight was trying to
dispose of the notes for from 25 to 50
per cent of their face value. A p'ot
was arranged to tnap Haight. A clerk
from Broker Lowe's office was sent to
make a proposition to Hialght to pur
chase some of Simmons' paper. Haight
agreed to sell some for (0 per oent of
their value. He at last agreed to dis
pose of $50,000 worth of paper. He was
arrested and still had notes in his poa
session amounting to $33,999.

Pete, the Chinaman who achieved no
toriety as the alleged agent of Chris
Buckley in the Jury bribing In the

tle Pete Is the leading Chinese gambler
of San Franolsco, and la noted as nervy
at any kind of game. He hlaa made big
