She Goes Onto the Sands at the Head of Sand Island Yesterday Morning. A Sixty-five Mile Gale Blowing off the Bar Makes Things Decidedly Un pleasant Around the Strand ed Ship. Early yesterday morning word came up from the Cape that the four-masted ship Kentmere had dragged her an chor and gone onto the sands about 1,000 yards east of Sand Islands. The Escort had already gone down to the bar, and as soon as the news was re ceived of the Kentmere's difficulty, the Relief hurried to the scene. It seems that early in the morning a heavy gale from the south sprung up, and soon the ship began to drag her anchor. The second anchor was cast, but it did not prevent the huge vessel from going slowly onto the spit. Both tugs soon had Wowsers to the ship, but they were unable to move her from the soft mud Into which she had become firmly imbedded. They pulled and hauled un til a hawser snapped, when they gave lit up, the tide having started' to ebb. It was the opinion of all who were on the spot that she was In no immediate danger, and that about the only thing left to do was to await calmer weather when the ship could be lightered. During the afternoon the steamer II waco landed the Fort Canby life sav ing crew an Sand Island, and It was ar ranged that If at any itlme during the nlghit the h1p should need a tug, rockets would be fired as a signal. The Point Actoms crew were over during the afternoon, but returned to their sta tion before nightfall. Both Captain McCoy and Copt. Howes of the tugs, say that there is but little danger of the Kentmere sustaining any damage, unless an unusual gale should drift her onto the hard eands, a thing that 1s altogether unlikely. A gentleman who seemed well ac quainted with the situation, having Just come up from the Kentmere, said to an Astorian reporter last evening: "The Kentmere under certain con ditions is in a very bad place. If the weather moderates, no danger is ap prehended, but if the gale continues for a day or two, the sand will probably pile up outside of her, thus leaving her In a regular hole. When the gale struck her yesterday morning, she be gan to drag her anchor, and 80 fathoms of chain was run out. She continued to drag and the other anchor was let go, but it seemed to have not the slight est effect, for the big vessel drifted nearly two and one-half miles bringing up at the head of Sand Island. The 'breeze was blowing fully 85 miles on hour at the time the tugs reached her.' The general impression Is that the Kentmere will Wave to be lightered ful ly 500 tons before she can be moved, after which a survey will be made of her hull before going to sea. Tht tugs will go dtown again this morning and If possible pull the ship out into ' deep water. DISTINGUISHED VISITORS. On Wednesday afternoon the Rev! and Mrs. V. F. Partch arrived in our city.
