The maglo word calls to one's mind childish days when for weeks before (that eventful day, the one thought -waa of what old Santa would bring. To most of u the happiest period of our lives hat been that time when, fearful that the sly old Krle Krlngle would discover us and fly away, we have stolen softly about the half darkened room and arranged the atocklnga that we knew would be visit' ed before morning. There were sad little hearts then, and there are now, hearts that have never been made glad by the generous visits of 'this strange old fellow from the Arotlca, and when we picture the plnohed little faces peering into the happy homes of the more fortunate, longing for some of the good things that ere there In abundance, it takes all the enjoyment out of the occasion Here In Astoria we are not In excep tion to this class, for it would not be A very hard matter to find a number of homes where Christmas will be any thing but a happy day. Could there be anything more appropriate then, than for the good christian people of our city to step In and raise a liberal fund with which to purchase presents for those we have with us, who would oth erwise receive nothing? , It is even a pleasure to contemplate the many heavy hearts that a few dollars would gladden on that day. , Not long ago It waa the fashion to sneer at "religion in politics," and "God and morality party," was the choices: theme for scoffing before certain audi' enoes. When the churches of New Jer se', says the New York Tribune, took up arms agwlnut the saloon and gam biers legislation, the rtraotldal polttl clans, not of one party exclusively, mocked at them and predicted tha blow ing of rams' horns without any dis turbance of the walls of Jerioho.' It wa so whon the churches of Brooklyn be. (pan to have an opinion about mvnlel pal corruption. BtlU Inter, the crusade .of Dr. Parkhurat was derided and de nounced, even fcy some clergymen. But a groat lesson has been taught, that the people are not careless or Indifferent whan their government Is made the tool of fraud, vice and crime. This lesson! will have Its curative Influence with the practical politicians of both parties. It will teaoh Republicans as well as Dcm- ooraitio managers and legislators that the moral and religious sentiment ot lth e people cannot be disregarded with Impunity. It Is but th truth that the people of New York themselves, by so kmg tolerating and upholding the low est and basest methods and Influences, have done much .to demoralise active men In both parties. If the Republican party has suffered least, and has kept Its hands more clean, It Is because that party embraced fewer of the voter who are Indifferent to All moral or re llglous obligation, so ithat its active men were thus held more strictly to ooountftblllty in party counsels, But U la not the Ie true that men of both parties had been made to feel, by the long and insolent triumph of vice and crime In that staCe, that the people had lost all regnrd for higher obligor tlons In OvtMr partisan teal. A grand lemon It is for all of thm, when more than s thrtd of the Democratic voters refuse) to support the party of organis ed knavery. To those' of our late railroad visitors who were in this seatlon of the coun try for the first time, nothing was more surprising than the extent and Import, ance of the government work at the mouth of the river, and it was a com. mon remark among them that It far exceeded In every particular any opin ion they had previously formed. But still more surprising was the positive assertion, by those who have made a study of the subject, ithat this work has been the most economically and successfully administered of any or like magnitude ever undertaken by the gov eminent. It Is altogether probable that not a Itttla of this high record of effi ciency is due to the remoteness of the work's location from the political cen tres of the country, and Its consequent Immunity from all Jobbery and other forms of interference to which It might have been subjected by those having a "pull." The competent and faithful public servants In charge of the work. being thus left free and unembarrassed In the execution of plans and methods formed fromi painstaking study and practical experience, have produced re. suits actually unlooked for even by those who originally projected and esti mated the cost of the work. The peotacle of Mr. Carlisle's help. lossness and utter Incompetency In the face of the crisis to which the policies of his party have brought the public treasury would be pitiful, if it were not so exasperating and serious. His second bond Issue is as complete a fail ure as the first. The banks have not only combined to buy his bonds in the very gold taken from the treasury .it Is the office of the bonds to replace but, as appears In the telegraphio news printed this morning, they have re fused to pay more than the shameful little premium of $116,000 for them. All the Populist, and) some of the Democratic papers charge the, banks with pursuing a policy of hoarding gold rto "plnoh" the treasury Into mak ing further loans, In addition to Mr, Carlisle's last failure. Intelligent peo ple will remember it used to be the Republican way to keep the treasury In an unpinohable condition, and that is the only safe sort of financiering yet Invented for a nation or an individual. $100 REWARD, WOO The reader of this paper will be pleas ed to learn that there Is at least one dreaded disease that science has been able to cure In all Its stages, and that Is Catarrh. Hall's Catarrh Cure Is the only positive cure known to the med ical world. . Catarrh being a constitu tional disease, requires a constitutional treatment. Mall's Catarrh Cure Is tak en Internally, acting directly on the blood and mucous surfaces of the sys tem, thereby destroying the foundation f the disease, and giving the patient trength by building up the constitu tlon and assisting nature In doing ItB work. The proprietors have so much fnlth In Its curative powers, that they otter one Hundred Dollars for any case that It falls to cure. Bend for list of testimonials. Address, F. J.
