Duffy, as business manager. Astoria, Or., Oct. 6, 1894. SAM'L ELMORE, Proprietor. EUROPE MUST PLEAD GUILTY. The "unspeakable Turk" Is at his hor rible business again In Armsnla. While the reports of outrages committed are j conflicting, there can be no doubt In, the mind of any one familiar with the'piexlon, or one half the number of the facts of history that, If the accounts ithat come from ChrisUan sources are exaggerated, they have at least a suffi cient foundation in fact to send a shudder of horror and a wild thrill of anger through all Christendom. Is it not time, In this end of the nineteenth century, to put a stop to the murder of people and the violation of women by thousands? No Apache outbreak in Arizona was ever fuller of Incidents that appeal to humanity than the per iodical campaign of the Turk against his helpless victim, And who is the Turk? Who but that Interloper In Europe who has perpetrated exact)! the same sort of barbarities ever since he obtained a footing there! All Eu. lis Catarrh. Hall's Catarrh Cure Is the rone was aroused uiralnst him on that!ony P0"1 cura known to the med rope was aroused ugainst mm on tmu ,pa, world- catarrh being a conBtltu- ground centuries ago. Within tlie mem-1 tlonal disease, requires a constitutional ory of men of middle age he repeated them In Bulgaria. Ills appetite must now be fed on vlotlms who have not the Immediate protection of European Powers. But who keeps the Tur,t In a t-osltton. where he can commit these awful deeds? Who but the jealous nations that fear to oust him lost one or the other of them should get an undue ad vantage from the division of his nccu muloted centuries of spoil? Not on the head of the savages of Constantinople, but on that of Queen V ictoria and Em. peror William and Cxar Nicholas as well rests the responsibility for the awful tale. Because they have not duly divided hla effects beforehand, they let him He In his foul lair on the Boa. phorus, thence to Issue when his appe. tlte for lust and blood grows Bharp, and fall upon hla helplcuni prey. You ran got (thousands of people together In Exeter Hall to support some scheme for Christianizing .he peopb of Cen tral Africa. You can aend a Gordon to Khartoum and canonize his memory. You ran enlist all England against the slave trade, You can raise funds to send an Impudent antl-lynchlng com niUtee to the United States to Invest! gate alleged violence nore. You can at any time get a pious announcement from the Dmperor of Germany of his devotion to the cause of God and the church. But you cannot fr one mo ment get those people t unite against the historic foe of Christianity and olv- llls-vtlon lest Russia should get free control of the Black Son, or Aus tria should obtain an extra province, or the balance of power should be dls ttirbed In Central Asia. Notwithstanding the president's ex presslon of complete confidence In Sec rotary Carlisle, It is plain that the head of the treasury department la having a hard row to hoe. In the language of the poet, hla way is "thorny and cruel, and cold and gray," The only escape from the oonvlatlon that the president has subjected Mm to Indignity la th belief that there has been soma "tall lying" somewhere. But apart from that. It la pretty well known that ie wanted ito go over to New York and make a speech for Hill, but waa or dered by hla chief not to give an; such exhibition of pernicious activity. Then thre weeks ago ha accepted n InvtaMton to apeak at the Chamber of Commerce dinner In New York city on November 20, but on Wednesday of last week came to the conclusion that It would be impossible to keep the en gagement on account of Ms absorption In his annual report. Of course he knew on October 24 that his annual report would be on ithe stocks at this time. Apparently the Consecrated One has intervened again, and prohibited the speech, for fear that Mr. Carlisle might "put Ms foot In It." Verily these are hard times for Democrats In mors senses than one. Dr. MoCoBfa was a venerable, noble, beautiful man, whose life was laborious, useful, lofty, and charming. He died full of honors, worn out with many years of good deeds, beloved, revered, famous. There was always a quaint charm about Ms personality, a bit of the picturesque in his character, but he was a strong man, lovable in his strength, whose simple sincerity of life had an ineffable dignity, and ithrough all his life shone the white light of truthfulness. It is not too much to say that his wholesome In fluence upon the young men of Amer ica during his quarter of a century of kindly and Inspiring toll among them may be distinctly traced. There are five senators counted Pop ulists Jones and Stewart, of Nevada; Allen, Kyle and Peffer; and there Is one expected rrom worm oaronna unless the governor calls an extra ses sion of the old legislature. The Demo crats are expected Ho number thirty nine. If the Utah senators are ad- minted, and are Republicans, there will be forty-five senators of that com- senate. It Is said Peffer would help them out, but he Is a doubtful citizen, though a zealous protectionist. There are many good reasons why the people of Astoria should feel more encouraged over the present status of Che railroad question than ever before. The water commission Is neither dead nor sleeping. It may have some facts to communicate shortly which will af ford universal satisfaction. $100 REWARD. 1100 The reader of this paper will be pleas ed to learn that there Is at least one dreaded disease that Bclence has been able to cure In all its stages, and that treatment.
