Duffy, as business manager. Astoria, Or., Oct. 0, 1894. SAM'L ELMORE, Proprietor. A NEW BUSINESS OUTLOOK. The result of the election In the Unit ed States Is worth many millions of dol lars to trado Industrial Interests. There is a feeling of restored confidence In every Inhalation. A halt has been called In the work of the disintegrators of American Industries. . From this time the work of repairing the dam ages Inflicted In the past two years will proceed. Bays of hope now cen ter about every Industry and every avenue of trade. Plans and proposi tions for enlarged business, and for new lines of business, which have been held In abeyance pending on expression of public opinion, can now take shape and become realized facts. Every move along these lines serves to stimulate others to similar action, as every show of confidence tends to beget confidence. Some little time may elapse before the wheels of a new era get fairly In mo- tlon, but unlesj all signs fall, this coun try is now starting on a new, brighter, and more enlarged period of progretts and prosperity than any In Its history. The foundation for this hopeful view was laid in the millions of votes for a change in administration Tuesday. Eight members of congress have their lives Insured in sums from $125,000 to (500,000. Some of them are men who must work for a living; others might !ive without work. It appears that men of wealth may profit by Insurance, and poor men certainly may. Then were thera, nothing In It but the monjy paid for Insurance, this would be a good tiling If on be Ignorant of the rovcral methods, be ought to consult an honest and Intelligent friend, for there is great difference between the. principles and methods of companies. Many schemes, under one name or another, are heartless frauds. All of us who are wage earners should re solve that as soon as times Improve we will secure a little Insurance as toon as possible. They who do not think this advisable may be disposed to put n dollar or so In a reliable savings bank weekly or as often as may be. If one cannot eave anything, there Is nothing to be saved. Many who hnvo never saved might have saved. There are few of us who have not been scmewhut careless In our expenditures. During the past year, whit comfort It would have been to have had a few dollars in a savings bank! ti im.it .. !M Excluding the number of csars who fell ns Inglorious victims of the palace revolution during the eighteenth cen tury, the average length of the reigns of the Russian autocrats has been ex. ceptlonally high compared with thore of other European monurchs. Thus, Peter the Great ruled 36 years; Cath erine II, S4 years; Alexander I, who as cended the throne In 1S01, reigned 24 years', Nicholas, his successor, ruled Si years, and Alexander II, the son of Nicholas, had reigned 26 years when he was assassinated In 1881. Substan tially the whole period beginning with the eighteenth century, has been occu pied by the reigns of seven monarch of Russia. "Tho Poems of Osslan" havt been a mystery for mor than a hundred years. Whether author or compiler, Macpheraon was so much of a man that a careful biography has appeared r.t this late day. He was son of a poor Uvv'.-r ! TI"t).w.i, his way through Aberdeen College and a year at Edlnburg, taught school and won attention through his "discovery" of ancient manuscript, which he trans lated from the Gaelic, as the poems of Osslan, who was said to have lived In the third century. The three gentlemen selected by the Republican delegates yesterday as can didates for councllmen to be voted for at the coming election, are a!l well known citizens, and men capable of conducting the affairs of the city. They will be elected as certain as today Is Sunday.
