Duffy, as business manager. Astoria, Or., Oct. , 1894. SAM'L ELMORE, Proprietor. OUR SALEM FRIEND. The Bulem Independent has always shown a warm Interest In Astoria's endeavor to secure a railroad, and has never failed to give it a favorable mention. In summing up the present outlook, It says editorially: The prospects for a railroad from Astoria to some transcontinental con nection are much brighter. They have fruited almost Into a certainty. The rich owners or backers of the Coos Bay and Roseburg railroad, the Spreck les people, are pushing that line east ward, and the year 1895 will llkuly mark its completion Into the "Jmpiua valley, with ambitions for further extensions. No doibt the date next month of the sale of the Oregon Pacific will find, active bidders present, ready to take In the property, extend the road over the mountains, and give it favorable connection with eastern business. It Is said the Union fad lie will be a bidder , at the suit). That rai.road needs very i much an nutlet to the 1'iiclllo ocean, and the rumors no doubt have a foot-, ing. The Southern Pacific will not see the Union Pacific or soinu other road take all the Astoria business. It will certainly extend Us line from Sheridan to Oregon's Oaten ay City. Then the big Burlington, the Grant Northern, tho Chicago and Norta.retern, the Northern Pacific, the Rio Grand West ern, et?., etc. are looking covetously Paclfloward. Oregon will eventually hui me m.un line or a orancn or ail those big roads. . Eventually Is not long for this age. Tho next live and ten years will witness vondcrful changes in Oregon's railroad map. The sum period will sec as gieat changes in all lines of material development. The future of bur state looks bright Indeed. Unless It Is the dispatch that the Chtncso tried to purchase the British naval flttt In Chlnene waters, nothing so funny has been reported as the fol lowing from tho Chicago Grocer: "One of the effects of the prolonged contest between China and Japan is that an Increased demand for American flour has been created. Several ship loads which huve been sont on speculation to the Aslatlo port have brought large profits, the objection being that it is almost Impossible to secure a return cargo. Several of the vessels have ro turned loaded with b,lek, that being the only available urtlela which could be secured." The following from the same paper Is quite us reliable; "It is said that Oregon millers are beginning to ship flour to South Africa, the extremel) low coat" of production making such a move possible. The very best flour can be delivered on vessels at Portland and the Tuget Sound ports at tiAi per barnl, and several cargoes are being (hipped each week." The Emperor William, of Germany Is a rapid young man. He had a ban quet of officers going on when he heard of the death of the Czar, and at once made stx-ct'h, lie meant to be gra cious. He thought the time had ar rived when he and Divine Providence together should give the world aid and comfort. There was, howevor. one In dlHoretton In bis speech. Thure was a veiled Implication Jhat there was to be a chance for the better In the re !ivt!'ns of Ormnny and Russia, This TtAM Ja,t the thins that shuuld not ?..! U a -u r. v.vt.'y MUJ it. lull the color showed in William's glass. He Is over-doing the" Joy and France the sorrow about the death of the Czar. The Cathlamet Garotte, to say the least, Is Inconsistent. In an editorial column It makes the statement '.hat Hon. J. G. Megler run behind his tick et In every precinct In the vhole dis trict, except Brooklleld, while on the same page In another column It pub lishes the returns which show that in many precincts he ran far ahead of his ticket. How about Chinook, Pacific county, where the returns read thus ly: Megler, 72; Boney, 0? Today the subsidy contract committee will make a report on. the proposltfon submitted by Messrs. Stanton and as sociates. It is hoped that the matter will be decided upon without any pre judice In favor of other railroad pro motors who are said to be on their way hither. If the Stanton delegation can show that they will he able ta build the road within a reasonable time, there should be no hesitancy In accepting their proposition. But one or two deeds to the pipe-line right-of-way are wanted! before the work will commence on clearing away the trees and brush along the route surveyed. The sooner the deeds are all In thj sooner will the people liave the use of the thousands of dollars ly ing idle In the banks. There Is no ordinance In this city authorizing the chief of the fire de partment to enter places of amusement and remain during the performance without paying his way the same as other people. Mr. Foster has certain ly exceeded his authority in this re spect. There are a good many native MIs- eourlans living in Astoria, and strange to say, they are all. Republicans. One can pick them out of a crowd r.t any time just now, since the news has been confirmed that the old state has thrown off the shackles of Democracy. Adolph Sutro, the mayor-elect of San Francisco, will be able to play his cards with a high hand now. We venture to predict that Mr. Sutro will make a gtod mayor. With a railroad building In the spring and $200,000 being expended on new there Is no reason why waterworks, ABtorla will not be a pretty good place for one to live in It Is quite possible that Mr. Boney, of Pacific county, Wash,, has, ere this, Bhed cc-Plmm tears In looking over the Checks That Pass In the Night. New York seems about to charge Chicago with postponing her criminal executions in order to swell that regis tration list.
