THE DAILY ASTORIAN, ASTORIA, FRIDAY MORNING. AUGUST 24 1894 NO OPPOSITION. A Jewell Man Runs a Unique Transpor tation Company and Coins Money. There Is an Ingenious Individual nam ed I. N. Foster living on a ranch In the1 vicinity of Jewell vho will Borne day become a bloated bondholder If some one doea not head him off. The town of Mist on the Nehalcm River contains two general stores and is the trading point for the ranchers down the Xehalem 33 miles as for as Mlhhn- wttki, and this man Foster has for some time been running a novel trans portation company In which he holds every office from president down to as tlsUnt secretary. While not showing Fueh lirge gross receipts In his quarter ly r3port to himself, his dividends would cause some of the Mississippi gteam boatmen to think of the old times on the upper river when a 75,000 steam boat cleared herself in one trip from St. Loulft to St. Paul and back. Mr. Foster leaves his home at Jewell the first of tho .week fof Mist, and upon his arrival, at that place he commences to build him a boat 24 feet long, four feet wide, and two feet deep, which he completes and loads with what orders the storekeepers may have received for parties down the Nehalem river. These orders generally amount to about fifty hundred weight The current takes the boat down to the different points between Mist and Mlchawaka, and at these points he lands and de livers his freight, averaging about 60 cents a hundred for hauling. Upon reaching the end of hla route he either gives the boat away or sells it, as the 'current will not allow him to take It back, but as the boat only cost a half day's work and a couple of dollars for the material, It Is cheaper to leave It than to try and get It back. Ho re turns on foot, and after stopping on his ranch for a day, proceeds to Mist the first of the week where he Is ready to build another boat for another $25 worth of freight. CAPTURED THE MARSHAL. He is the one that always doubts the prosperous trade reports he hears of his competitor, who does advertl3e. He sits In the back of his store, smokes his pipe and wonders why he isn't making any money. He has the blues when he should have trade. He not only lets his neighbor get that neighbor's share of the business, but a good part of his also. He sees people whom he thought old friends of his go into fctj competitor's store and come out with bundles of goods, when he has the same articles on his shelves, and perhaps at lower prices than they paid his competitor for them. Why is this so? It is because his com petitor lets the public know in an in telllgent way through the local papeis what he has to sell and when he has it. Tho successful advertiser looks after his advertising space as he does his clerks- He changes his ada. in such a way the poople are attracted by them.
