THE DAILY ASTORIAN, ASTORIA, TUESDAY MORNING, AUGUST M, 1894 HIS I.AST PLVNOEi Judgo E. A. Wiiiwall Drowned Whlla Bathing at Seaside. Jucl?e E. A. Wiswall, of Vancouver, Washington, was drowned at Seaside while bathing Sunday morning. There Is something terrible about the sudden taking from our midst of any person, especially one who seems so full of health and happiness as did Judge Wiswall. The accident occurred at 11 - o'clock, Just as the tide was beginning, to ebb very strong, and a terrific ua dcrtow had set In. He had been in the habit of going In bathing every day during his month' sojourn at Seaside, and being an excel lent swimmer would often venture far beyond the lifelines. His wife had warned him repeatedly not to risk the breakers, but he always laughed pleas ontly at her fears, and assured her that there was no danger. On this oo caslon she repeated her warning and entreated htm not to go In, which he half consented nod to do, but the sight of a half hundred others sporting In the surf was too much for him, and tossing his coat to his wife, who was sitting on the sand with a party of friends, he ran to the water's edge and 1-lungjd Into the surf. Attorney W. B Dillard, of Sa. Helens, accompanied Judge Wiswall out to where the water was deep enough to swim In, and being a daring swimmer himself, started ou boldly for the biggest combers In sight, He was soon fifty yards ahead of the Judge, and noticing that a heavy cur rent had set in, turned and swam for shore. It was a hard struggle, and more than once the thought of drown Ing occurred to him. As he came up with Judge Wiswall the latter cried for help, as he was fast giving out. Mr. Dillard realized that it was a case of life and death with himself, as the un. cfcTtow was ( Ibecomlng stronger and stronger. He made another effort and reached a place where he could stand at the same time calling loudly for as sistance. Ho called back to his friend to take it easy, as help would soon reach him. Jack, Pete and Nace Grant, three ex cellent swimmers, had Just gone out and were in their bath rooms. They happened to Bee the drowning man throw up his arms, and rushing out and down to the water, swam all t'.bnut the place where the unfortunate man had disappeared. It was a brave act on the part of the Grant boys, for It was only after a des perate struggle that the succeeded in again reaching shore. A boat was hastily secured from the Necannlcum nnd an attempt made to launch it, but without avail.. James Astrup, of this city, was In the boat, and deserveB great credit for the risk he took In at tempting to get out over the breakers. Ho picked up Jack Grant, who wa9 fast becoming worn out In his efforts to swim against the awful current run ning at the time. Mrs. Wiswall was standing on the beach all this time a horrified specta tor, watching the struggles of her hus, band. For an hour afterward she walk ed the beach, carrying her child, weep. lng as only a heartbroken woman can. The body has not been found and probably will hot for several days. In speaking of the ead affair, Mr. Dillard said that It seemed that he and Judge Wiswall were caught in a great whirlpool, four or five hundred feet In jlnmeter. He thinks It only lasted but ten minutes, but he was fortunate enough to be on the very outer edge, Judge B. A. Wiswall was about 35 years of age, having been born In Iowa, He attended the college at Grlnnell where he met Miss Loretta Key, to whom he was subsequently married Ho was a graduate of the law depart' ment of the Iowa State University, and, Immediately after graduation, came to Vancouver, five years ago, and began the practice of his profession. His merit as a citizen ana lawyer were speedily recognized, and he soon acquir ed a leading position at the bar. He was the law1 partner of W. W. McCre- file. Two years ago he was nominated by the Democrats as superior Judge of the Vancouver district, and he was elected, though the district Is Republi can. His elevation to the bench was a deserved testimonial of the very . high esteem he was held In by all who knew him. He made a most creditable record as a Judge, and and the future seemed to have In store for him higher honors, A widow and one child survive him, They are at the beach. OLNEY NOTES. The dance was well attended by a pleasant sociable throng who tripped the light fantastic far Into the night Miss Annie Glasser a popular young lady of this place, last Monday left on a month's outing with friends at Jewell. Mr. N. Hllleary gave a farewell dance to the citizens of Olney last Thursday evening, prior to his departure for As tortai where he will reside for a short time. Mr. and Mrs. George Morton and children, who have been spending a few weeks in the country, enjoying the beauties of country life, will leave for home the latter part of the week. Mr. C. J. Stupp, who sustained se vere Injuries to his right leg in a game of baseball three weeks ago, is rapidly recovering and is able to be about and take his accustomed place among the Olney nine. Messrs. Kimball and Her.drickson two enterprising farmers of Young's river, finished harvesting their large crop of hay two weeks ago. The hay, by the way, is of an exceptionally good qual ity, unexcelled by any heretnfore raised by them or others In preceding years In Young's River valley. Yesterday, while Mr. Thomas lender son, at Young's River, was endeavoring to put a large hog into a wagon, the animal turned sudden!', snapped ltd ujrljr Jows, and unfortunately run out of Us lowr tusk through tho fleshy part of Mr, Hendsrson's wrist, tearing an ugly gash about an Inch long, Some of the old timers out this wuy are beginning to open their eyes with astonishment by the sight of a donkey engine on shoes, hauling itself all over the country road under the supervision of Mike Logan. The engine is to be taken back of Green Mountain to be used by John Chltwood In his logging operations, which he proposes to start at once, so soon as he can get the en gine to his camp. The American Eagles, a baseball nine from Astoria, visited this little burg last Sunday and engaged the Olney boys in a match game. The country boys lack that training "which the or ganized nine from Astoria possess all the necessary requirements for a good team. The score at the end of the game stood twenty to thirty .in favor of the Eagles, who were so elated with their victory that one broom would not do them, but they wanted all they could scare up to make a good showing to their friends at home. A largo number of residents of Young's River and vicinity boarded Mr. Joe Alley's scow, "Maud," Saturday morning for Sklpanon, whence they proceeded Sunday morning for the beach in the vicinity of the Calrnsmore, where they picnicked, dug clams, caught crabs, and enjoyed themselves to their heart's content, until the shades of dusk drew near. They then boarded the schooner and returned home with many trophies of their days' outing, principally clams and crabs. JAS. CORBETT, NORTH BEACH. Tills popular summer resort is grow. Ing more and more in favor with the pent up city people, who seek proAtabl as well as pleasant outing for a few weeks. It Is estimated that nearly 8000 people have landed this season at Ilwaco. Its popularity does not alone depend upon the beautiful locations, from the "Wit lows" to Ocean Park; for cottage and tents, or the delightful surf-bathing, attractive as the are. But no small credit Is to be attributed to the kindly and courteous treatment every one re eelves from those having in charge the transportation from Astoria to the va. rlous stations on North Beach. Cap tains Kamm and Parker, of the Ocean Wave and Ilwaco, Messrs. Egbert and Goulter, and President Loom Is, of the railroad department, all seem to vie with euch other to see who can be the most. courteous and accommodating to the hundreds who visit this coast (among whom are many women and nticiren.) Every one will find North Beach a most delightful place to spend a few weeks outing. ALL FREE.
