TU12 DAILY AMOBIAN, ASTOttlA, tfttiDAV MlMMM, JULY 37, 1804 Olney; Or., July E4, 1884, Editor Astorlan: Whatever wit, wisdom, knowledge, or iihllltv mav be shown by a paper, Is supposed to exist In some unBeen or acle who sits veiled behind the mys terious "we;" but as the writer Is neith er an editor, and emperor, nor a tape worm, he prefers to use the singular pronoun, "I." Thinking- that a com munication from Olney would interest some of your readers, I am prompted to give you some of the impressions made, upon me during my short resi dence in this locality, as well as the news, for publication in your evcellent paper. The Olney people, while not remark able for great piety or devotion to re ligious worship, are sober, upright, or derly and industrious, bub not narrow minded, one of their prominent char acteristics being largeness of spirit in Judging, acting, etc; they are great lovers of the terpslchorean art; and when music arises with "its voluptuous swell," Hllleary's warehouse presents a scene of mirth and beauty, and every heart beats happily. Tho farmers have been assiduously engaged for some time In. cutting hay, the most of which is now harvested. The swing of the scythe or the clack of the mowing machine everywhere re minds one of the Industry which char acterizes them. Mr. Alexander Normand, one of our most highly-esteemed and honored citi zens, recently qualified as justice of the peace, to which office 'he had been elected by a majority of which he may well feel proud. He is a man of indus try and enterprise, being a manufac turer of charcoal, of which he has about 1000 bushels on hand, as well as'irr. and Cordray's, Portland to do a farmer. Mr. Peterson, a prominent citizen, and the newly elected commissioner, has about ten harvest hands working for him. He has been in the emply of Mr. Kamm many years, and has amassed considerable wealth. I might add here, however, that he Is an ad mirer of the fairer Bex, which doubtless is a desirable element of character, and the central figure of attraction among the ladles the greater society light! around which the lesser lights revolve. Messrs. Stalker and Blaisdell, two ex cellent and highly respected citizens, are doing profitable work In timber. Mr. Hllleary, one of our best citizens, has a boarder who is training himself for a prespectlve contest against an Astoria pugilist. Mr. Hoffman, of Yamhill county, and Mr. Lehnlg, of Portland, are visiting at Corno's. Mrs, Haaven and dnughter have re turned home, where they will remain for the summer. The lower Olney school Is having a vacation of a week's duration. Mr. John Leahy, an Influential citizen and the director having charge of the lower school, sends his oldest son to an educational institution In Vancouver, Washington. There was an excursion from Astoria to this place on each of the two past Sundays. The baseball game on Kamm'a farm last Sunday between the Olneys and the Battle Creeks resulted in victory n tho. fnmo, it. n io,-oi .iiu ' i " oiTCtmiuin. .niitiiiBciiitiiiu wu made for another game next Sunday afternoon at the same place between 4 K Alnatrd nA n nl..K - A t .-, .. 1 , .,.. i uo not oDjeci to james uoroeu, orj I rlver waveg an(j all the summer as he signs his name, "Timothy Cal- 1 time singers comes sweetest to the lowlable," expressing a contemptuous housewife when she knows the 6 o'clock onlnlorr concerning the nritlon T rtpliv-1 meal can be got ready on her double- ered. or at least attempted to deliver, on the Fourth of July; but myself and others do Insist that hereafter he sign his true name and not conceal It by a pseudonym. We further found that, unljke lard, Cottolene had ., no unpleasant odor when cooking, and lastly Mother's favorite and con servative cooking authority came out and gave it a big recommendation which clinched the matter.
