IT LOOKS ENCOURAGING. A Telegram from Brown & Sheehan of Interest to Astorlans. The following lengthy dlBpatch from Brown & Sheehan, of New York, ex plains the failure of Judge Brown to put In an appearance early last month as expected. It Is respectfully submitted to the Astorlan's readers: New York, July 17, 1894. To Alfred Kinney, Astoria: ' Judge Brown was dangerously ill, nnd his condition Is such as makes him phy sically unable to undertake the journey or business, and at present no other person can take his place, because some men connected with the project rely solely upon us to get the affair In legal shape. His knowledge of affairs and re quirements of the business would ne cessitate his presence there. The rejection of the first offer Imposed great difficulty to get the financial con ditions In suoh shape as would satisfy all. Our people worked hard, with the result that the day Judge Brown started for Oregon, June 12th, he possessed n letter front an officer of a responsible trust company In New York, to the fol lowing effect: "The project you have proposed to us, for immediate completion of the As toria and Portland railroad, is so prom ising that I regret very much the tech nical difficulties in the way of a definite contract for advance at this time. But I trust It will be possible for you to put the title to the real est'tte In such form that this company will be able to accept It as security for an ample loan, fortified by your proposed bonds." It was to carry out the plan agreed upon, which meant the completion of the road upon a money basis, that the Judge started. Meantime, we are en deavoring to arrange affairs for another representative satisfactory to all to take up the matter in Oregon. This Is more. difficult than appei rs. Mr. Kinney, It Is almost Impossible under present con ditions, to get, and hard to hold, money for Western railroad enterprises. There fore, It is necessary for success to act carefully. We assure you that wo will relax no effort to hasten the matter and make up lost time. Please give a copy to Messrs Wattis & Cake. If this is satisfactory for the present, please wire us and prevent complications. When we telegraphed we believed the Judge would be able to resume the business, but were disappointed. BROWN & SHEEHAN. PERSONAL MENTION. J. D. Carrlgan, of Eagle Cliff, Is in the city. . Jeff Crandall has accepted a position with Foard & Stokes.
