It was a glorious Fourth, even down to the weather. The steamer Mendell has left for Port land to be repaired. Basket picnics were numerous in the woods about the city on the 4th. The Canadian Paclflc road has trains now running to and from Vancouver on time without transfer. There is nothing like a good example, The Ross, Hlggins & Co. store Is being repainted .a la Hotel Occident. At Trulllnger's mill they are changing one of the fly wheels; also some of the machfnerjMn the electric light plant. Goverrment inspector Jacobs is ex pected in the city today, to pass on the work completed at the custom house, The streets are as dry as a whipping post, and several small fires were statt ed on them by Uie flro crackers yester day. Anita Trenchard was painfully burned on the hands and face by the discharge of a toy cannon on the evening of the Fourth. The Pacific Can Factory is now run ning over time. Last week they shipped to canneries on the upper river over one and a half million cans. The probate court on yesterday or dered the removal to the asylum at Sa lem of Mrs. Ellen Rogers. Sheriff Hare ' and Miss McRae will leave with the lady today. Two fishermen found the body of young David Beasley in the bay Tues day forenoon. A game of football between the High School club and the Second Eleven of the Astoria Football Club will be played on the 'grounds, and no admission fee will be charged. . The match will be the first of the Beason between these two teams, and Is bound to prove extremely inter esting. - The following is the team selected to represent the High School in its match against the Second Eleven of the Asto ria Football Club at Smith's Point at 7 this evening. The supreme court handed down a de cision yesterday afllrming the famous case of Raymond vs. Flavel, decided by the lower court.ln favor of the defend ant some time ago. This case, it will be ' recalled, involves the title to a large tract of land, now Included within the limits of the city of Flavel; and the opinion of the supreme court confirms the title of the Flavel estate, which was attacked by the plaintiff, Raymond. The petition of Max Strahl to have th 1400 auctioneer's license -fee re pealed, was referred to the ways and means committee. B. R. Smith was awarded the con front for the Fifth street sewer, he being the lowest bidder. " The committee appointed on the late message of Mayor Kinney regarding the protection of the salmon industry made their reiort, as published in full In the Astorian last week. Mr. Lewis offered an amendment that the last clause be stricken out and the following amendment inserted: "We are of the opinion that the laws regarding the closed seasons and the weekly close time ore generally ob served, but thut the principal causes of the rapid decrease of the run of salmon 'are the fi&h wheels, fish traps, and other small mesh gear used In the fishing business, and that we should up ply to the legislature of the state for relief against these destructive agencies, as soon as iti Is held, and also to the general government for such relief as II in in their power to grant. After some discussion the report was adopted as amended. A petition for the removal of the burned salmon at the Astoria Packing Co. won referred to the chief of police with power to act. A resolution petitioning congress to add an appropiiatlon to .the pending sun dry appropriation bill of a sum of money sufficient to establish on the Columbia or tributaries a hatchery of not less than 100,000,000 fry per year was adopted and the council then adjourned.
