A man named Peterson was admitted to St. Mary's hospital yesttidny who has suffered a horrible but nnmeles3 mu tilation. He claims that It was Inflicted by two unknown men on one of the hills buck of the city where he was gathering salmon berries. Dr. Fulton says the man wns operated on In the worst possible manner, but that he will probably recover. The matter should be investigated by the proper authori ties. EX-POSTMASTER HARE. Mr. James W. Hare surrendered the postofHce to hU successor, Mr. Wise, yesterday morning, and during the brief interval ending tomorrow, when his duties as sheriff begin, he will be a plain private citizen. Mr. Hare hoe made an enviable reputation as post master. Not only Is It said that his administration of the office has been the best In Astoria's history, but the records of the department at Washing ton show that he was regarded os the best postmaster on the coast. A MUSICAL TREAT. A grand vocal and Instrumental con cert will be given on July 4, 1894, by the following distinguished artists; Herr August Aamold, the celebrated Norwegian vlollnlBt; Herr Ruthyn Tur ney, viola, assisted by the "Schubert Club" of Astoria, at the Methodist Epis copal church, Astoria, for the benefit of the musical fund of the church. The program will be one of the choicest character. Admission, 60 cents. Re served seats, 60 cents; children under 15 years, 25 cents.
