AN OUTING CLUB.
The Camera club ield a special meet
ing last night to arrange for a picnic,
which they intend to give shortly. It Is
thought that the Bicycle and Camera
clubs will together form an Outing club.

The young people are laying out a
tennis court near the Cedar Btreet
school, and Intend organizing a Tennis

ladles, as tennis is a game at which
they often excel.
A HOT FIRE.
There was a roaring bonfire going all
day yenterduy nt the government build

bish that have accumulated for years iu
the basement of the custom house. It
Is astonishing to note what enormous
quantities of "truck" is sent to post
masters and customs collectors.
"THE SEA QUKEN."
There is no doubt that this company
has shown Astorlans the most superb
and gorgeous scenery, the greatest
siK'clally olio, and withal the best spec
tacular performance ever seen in this
city. Owing to the Inadequate Blage
facilities, It has been Impossible to pre
sent "The Corsair," and It has been de
cided that as soon as the necessary al
terations can be made the company will
return and put on "The Corsair," with
all Its magnificence.
THE COUNCIL MEETING.
No business of any importance was
transacted at Tuesday evening's coun
cil meeting, there being no coinmunlcu
tlons of any character.
A paper on the preservation of the
salmon Industry was read by the mayor,
and referred to a committee composed
of Councllmen Barker, Young and Lang
worUiy. The following claims were reported
and allowed: C. E. Foster, J3.50; Free
man & Bremner, $35.2D; Fred. Salz, $3;
Dalgety Iron Works, $2.50; J. R. Clinton,
J12; Clatsop Mill Co., $144 and $146; It.
R. Marion, $150; Astoria Box Co., $14.09;
Foard & Stokes, $2.75; Oregon Improve
ment Co., $8; Griffin & Reed, $5.50; J. S.
Delllnger, $72; Joe Petty, $10; Astoria
Wood Yard, $5.75; Mrs. T. O'Brien, $19.21
and $18.03.
The following petitions were read and
referred to the.upproprlate committees:
From the Astoria District Messenger
and Electric Co., asking a franchise to
run a telephone system, was read and
referred to the committee on ways and
means.
From residents of Upper Astoria, ask
ing the council to change the existing
cow ordinance, wan read and referred
to the Btreet committee.
The committee on fire and water, on
the communication from the board of
delegates of the A. F. D., asking the
council to purchase exempt certillcates
at a cost of $1)2, recommended that the
certldcates be not purchased at the ex
pense of the city.
The ordinance providing for the issu
ance of $30,000 of municipal bonds for
general purposes was read the third
lime and duly passed.
Auditor Osburn states Hint the meet
ing was the shortest, and most unim
portant, with the exception of Major
Kinney's excellent paper, since he has
been connected with the city government.

with a view of recommending proper

also to take steps towards establishing
government hatcheries. A committee,
composed of W. H. Burker, chairman,
BenJ. Young and J. H. Langworthy,
was appointed to take action In the matter.
