to a number of grave senators who

can for a moment doubt. Mr. Have
meyer says he was promised "help" In
the arrangement of the. schedules by
certain senators whose names he gives,
What right has he to arrange tariff
schedules? What state does ha repre
sent In the senate; or what Interest had
he In, the matter beyond (hat of every
other man who eats sugar? There could
be but one kind of help desired, and
that was to have the operation of tho
new duty deferred until his trust hud a
chance under the McKlnley law to cor
ner and buy up a Bupply of foreign
sugar, to be held by It until the Inevllr
nblo rise til tho market under the Gor
man tariff. It must bo remembered Hint
Mr. Ilavemeyer was no Iron or wool
manufacturer, pleading for a little time
tn which to adjust his business to the
changed conditions, in order that ho
might be saved from lniendlng bank
ruptcy. None of these men were nl
lowed even so much as a public hearing
before tho committee. Mr. Carlisle had
no Interest In them, but he went out ol
his way to "help" Mr. Ilavemeyer.
There Is no doubt that Mr. Carlisle is an
honest ami honorable num. It Ib prob
able. In fact, that his tine sense of
honor In jRM-sonnlly seeing that his par
ty's pledges to Mr. Huvemeyer were
fulfilled Is responsible for the disgrace
ful plight In which he now finds him
self. His own testimony and admis
sions are enough tu condemn him, and
yet it Is likely the committee will con
trive some way to let him down; and bo
It will be with the others. The country
Is alck of the whole business, and the
only consolation Infill the scandal and
misery brought about by the Demo
cratic parly Is the reflection that the
people's eyes are at last open, and that
Blun t work will be made of the charla
tans and Impostors at the earliest ikwsI

There Is a strong nbubllity that
Judge llrowne's return to Astoria at this
tlmo means business In the railroad
matter. There could be no more aus
picious lime for the beginning of opora
thms, and an Immediate revival of
business may be confidently looked for.
The Astorlan, at a. huge expense, has
arranged with a special correspondei
for a series of letters on the great flood,
and Its damage to the business and oim-m.-rclal
Interests of Portland. The first
of these leMers appears In this morn
ing's Jsmie. and will doubtless be read
with Interest by all Astorlans. These
articles are written by a thoroughly
competent man. from his own personal
observations siel Investlsitlons. nnd
may 1 relied on for their accuracy. It
Is believed they will constitute the best
nnd most correct htetory of this grc'at

paper. '
VISITORS' DAY.
' At the Court Street School.
Yoarprrtnv wan vlMltors' dav at the
above-named school. The beautiful day,
urith th Ini'rwiHpd Interest of Barents
and friends, called out a large number
of visitors, all of whom expressed them
selves as highly delighted and well paid
for the visit.
The lare-e hall In the spacious build
ing was converted into a veritable ait
gallery, and amid a rich floral display
was exhibited an epitome of the year's
work of pupils and teachers consisting
of geographical maps; astronomical,
geological, geometrical and botantcaj
charts showing great care and profi
ciency on the part of the pupils. There
were also many fine specimens of draw
ing, penmanship and composition to be
seen. The exhibit of the high school
deserves special mention, if space per
mitted. The worn in tnis department
does great credit to both teacher and
pupil especially the astronomical and
ireoeranhlcal charts. The class In geol
ogy Has made a fine beginning for a
geological cabinet, which, If a few suc
ceeding classes do as well, will soon
rank with those of our schools of the
highest grade.
All departments, without exception,
make a fine showing of the year's work,
of which the teachers are Justly proud.
The dignity and courtesy of Profs. Ly
