That victory has taught the boys rather to work harder than to rest on their oars.-The next big game will be played in this city on the Fourth of.July, prob ably against the Portlands or Fort Can ny. The details will appear later, ns soon us the match Is made. The association game, of which the A. V. C. may be fairly .looked on as the pioneers In this state, is about to re- cleve a great Impetus. On Sunday the California steamer brought to this city the new batteries for Fort Canby from Fort Mason, Cal. In these companies are the majority of the famous Cali fornia military team of association play ers, who, during the last year, have defeated the Thistles, probably the fin est team In the United States, and won the gold challenge cup from all com petitors. In a record of 40 games they have 28 victories, and the Astoria boys will have to work like giants to keep fivm sustaining a series of crushing de feat It is asserted by the California newspapers that their goal keeper and centre forward are unrivaled In Amer ica, and that the whole team arc in most excellent condition, playing a beautiful game. On Sunday afternoon they were met by several of the A. F. C. members and were surprised and de lighted to learn that instead of having to abandon their favorite pastime they will have every opportunity of meeting opionents from all parts of the state, and will be stationed right alongside the largest association club In Oregon No time will be, lost after the new batteries are settled down at Canby in arranging for a series of contests with Astoria, so the public may expect some excellent exhibitions during the Season Just opened. Roth oflicers and men of the companies ore genuine sportsmen In all that the term implies. Their love of the game and the proximity of their residence will, no doubt, submit them to courtesies Innumerable at the hands of the A. F. C. ORADUATINO EXERCISES OF MISS WARREN'S SELECT SCHOOL. Tho audience room nt Miss Warren's school building was crowded last ewn Ir.g by the friends of the prir., ipal and her scholars. The entire program was very enjoyable, the recitations were without exception well rendered, but those of Charles Wright and Ralph Worsley were of such decided merit that they deserve especial commendation. Tho music,, both by pupils and friend? of the school was greu"tly appreciated by the entire audience. Miss Kate M. I'p shur, the only graduate this year, ac quitted herself creditably indeed. Her essay was a graceful effort,, delivered in a very modest, winning way, and was cf much merit, showing careful and rtudlous work In its preparation. Miss Warren has made a place for hers. It and her Sell 10 In the hearts ai.d bonu s of Astoria, and we hope the "Astoria SelcH t School" is one of the permanent Institutions of learning that will grow with the growth of our city und always maintain the high standard of excel lence It has already attained.
