NOT FOR SAMS.
In the State of Washington and Hrlt
Ish Columbia considerable attention has
been given of late to Point Roberts a
small point of land Jutting out' from the
mainland of Iirttish Columbia 'on the
United Stales sld of the boundary line,
This small point of land contains some
four thousand acres, and was set aside
as a military reserve, but It Is under
stood that It has been or will be shortly
abandoned as a reserve. British Colum
bia Is most anxious to obtain possession
of It, and with that end In view, the
government of the province has lately
been inc morlnllzed to petition the Do
minion government to enter Into nego
tiations with the United States looking
'to Its acquirement, one proposition tliut
has been mootod being that the Cana
dian government should exchange for It
some land opposite Alaska. The rea
son of this anxiety to secure the point
Is Its importances connection with the
salmon fishing Industry.
The Eraser river, as Is well known.
Is one of the leading places In the world
for salmon canning, there being about
thirty canneries alonjf the river. At
present there are two canneries lo
cated ut Point Roberts, and they dis
tribute some $30,000 to $40,000 a season.
It is estimated that of all the salmon
that go up the Fraser river about one
half pass around Point Roberts, nnd
while the Fraser river canneries are
harratsed by a high license and a short
season, the Point Roberts fishing
grounds are free from such embarrass
ments; the fish are numerouB, and there
Is room there for some six or seven
more canneries. Situated as It is, Point
Roberta Is a good place at which to
tstabllsh canneries and to Intercept the
llsh before entering tho Fraser river,
and Its acquirement by Canada would
practically place the control of this
growing Industry in this section in the
lumdB of the Canadians. Hradstreets,
GREAT CANADIAN STEAMERS.
The London Times, May 21, published
a description of the steamships that are
to be employed In the Anglo-Canadian
mall service In connection with the Pe
olllc lino. "The dimensions of the four
Atlautlo vessels are 072 feet in length,
62 fot -beam, anij depth of hold 42 fe;t,
ttlt.h. s. load dltift of 30 feet, making
them the deepest vessels afloat. They
are two feet deeper than the Cunnrd
liner I.tHunla. This great depth Is ren
de-rt-d i.-osslble by the fuct that the Can
adian und English hnrbors have deeper
waters than Uie harbor of New York
The gienter depth of the new steamers
allows of a stronger hull and will give
better results In a seaway, and also as
slst in the development of speed. The
fi eight carrying cniwu-lilrB of the steam
ers Is llxed ut. 3,500 tons each, In addi
tion to a coal bunker capacity of S.OOO
tona. The engines are of 21,000 horse
power, and they will drive the vessels
at a ieed of 20 knots ier hour In or
dinary weather."
