With much pleasure The Astorian re sents Its readers the following c.nv municatlon from the chairman of tbe water commission, and ventures to liop -the Mtme may prove an entirely satis factory explanation to Us numerous, housekeeping correspondents: Astoria, May 25, ISO I. Editor Astorian: Anent the "Water Question," again and again, nnd In answer to the In oulrlcB of "Indignant," "Exasperated" and other housekeepers In Astoria, I will state that Supt. Kmlth, of the water works, has, probably, heretofore, kindly informed all' housekeepers who are anxious to have a good supply of good hydrant water on hand at 4 o clock a. m.. or at all hourse of day and night, that If they (men or women) will put up a small npeclal tank that will con tain from 50" to 500 gallons, near their kitchens or bathrooms, connected with their household arrangement and with the waterworks' pipes, he will see that such tanks are kept suitably filled every day with the best and puretst water for domestic use in all Oregon. If he has not said that much, I will say It now and here for him. The entire expense of such special' tanks need be only from V to J10 for each family, or for-each house, and will be a great convenience nl all times, p.ummernnd winter, for fa oily line. The water commission lin.s, In the last six or eight monthE, reduced the cost r.r ,,t,i. for r.ich fimilv $1 per month, o. thn', Hlneo lHF.t summer water con '"" . . ., , ,v, ,.v: Humors nave, oeen ieoo ''- " - of water enougn 10 pay 101 nu u at every h?.iiseneeilingu thern and the job Just now of fixing up such things. And, take notice, Mr. Editor, that no taxpayers have to make up any deficit luj consequence of the. reduction in water rates. To your "Indignant Housekeeper," who Insinuates that more lively ini n are needed for wnter commissioners, il may be said that some of the present members of the commR-don more th:-n twenty years ago, while complainant was. a lxy (If now he Is a man), invested their thousands of dollars In Astoria city water works, when such nn undertaking was considered hazardous. n.nd neither they nor the present water commission have ever asked or received any tax money In support of the busi ness. Moreover, the writer, who perhaps needn't say It, defies said coinpluisiunt to name more live, less mossbuck, prop erly courteous persons In our city for commissioners. W. W. PARKER, Chairman of Commissioners. P. S., May 25 As the nbove was not nuUlshed in this morning's paper, as it appears u, lwv T w,n tn.lt whn qulsltive housekeepers (and some other persons too, probably) is not the short age of wnter, o.s the ut,e made of th "taxpayers' money. Perhaps they mum nicy couiil use It. more adv.int.i geously (to soiueluidy) than It Is nov used. Possibly that is so. Hut I will ana in tins connection that the commissioner is not using or handling any taxpayers-, money, in the ordinal y or bKict meaning of those words. V. . 1'. An JSO lot for J2. Air.
