To many readers of the Astorlan the beauties of scenery of the Shasta Uoute from the Golden Gate to the Columbia River are so familiar that any descrip tion may pall on them like a tale many times repeated. Sometimes, however, that with which we are perfectly famil iar impresses us anew when seen through the medium of a stranger's eyes. The human element Is here combined with the natural, and pictures are plen tiful where man has aided and improve ed nature by the cultivation of these fertile valleys and the adaption of her resources to his own benefit. A descent of 2,200 feet In 17 miles fur nishes some heavy grades, many sharp turns, loops and horseshoes, and nuraer genial mood consequent to physical ous doublings of our course, so that at comfort, and enable one to enjoy thor- times three tracks run parallel to one oughly the higher pleasures. another. A lovely sky delightful air and kind ly Bunshlne, produce an exhilarating effect, and we watch the grand panor ama, so constantly changing and vary ing, even when seen repeatedly by the passed some time previously. (A stone's throw being Indefinite, I will explnln that I mean a stone thrown by a wom an.) At Ashland we leave the observation car, as well as several tourists, who have occupied places on the cow-catcher winding of the road, with an increasing under the cars, and on top of a car- interest. Mingled with the enjoyment of the lovely Sacramento river and the awe inspired by the magnificent mountains, is the feeling of admiration for the human daring and skill that pushed so stupendous a piece of engineering through so seemingly inaccessible re gions.
