THE DAILY ASTORIAN, ASTORIA', TIICRSOAY MOUSING. MAY 24, 1894. THE WATER QUESTION AGAIN. Another housekeeper adds her com plaint to that of yesterday on this vex ing question, as appears from the ap pended letter. Cannot some relief be devised for these unfortunate women, or will not some one of the sterner sex (of whom, there Is reason to fear, the present correspondent has too exalted an opinion) do something or say some thing to prove their complaint imagin ary or unfounded. There Is grave dan ger that these cries of distress, IT re peated too often, may finally penetrate the seclusion of our honorable com missioners and disturb the even and peaceful tenor of their ways; a consum mation which will be devoutly regretted by all. Editor Astorian: Your kind reception or the recital of the trials of a house keeper, and more her example, lead me to add my testimony to hers. I am naturally a tiulet, paUent, long-suffer ing woman, not easily, disturbed by trl fles, and enduring philosophically what cannot be remedied. It had never oc curred to my woman's mind that money ror new and efficient water works could be even In sight, to say nothing of being In hand. Then, ..too, my trustful woman's na ture has always led me to believe Im plicitly in man's ability to transact all business, to overcome all obstacles In fact, to move theworld. So, you see, when man's skill and in genuity failed, as In the case of the water commissioners, It must be be cause of the total depravity of inani mate objects. Now, with 'my faith In man's effi ciency, as well as chivalry, wrecked, I add my experience to that of my braver Bister, "Housekeeper." Monday morning, washing experience Identical with hers. Four small chll dren, with eyes heavy from sleep, wait tha refreshing influence of the morning bath, before being physically or men tally toned up to begin the day. Experience has made the mother wary, so the faucet Is turned before letting out the water left In the bowl oer night for emergencies. No water, so the four little o'rtes must all have faces and hands washed in the same water. Besides the unhealthfulness and want of cleanliness, what a check put upon ail previous lessons In f;utldlrus care of the person, eo hard, at the best, to InsMU Into the minds of little, children Breakfast, not properly prepared for lock of water; dishes half-way washed the whole day's work unsatisfactory In the extreme and why? Can the commissioners answer? Very respectfully, EXASPERATED HOUSEKEEPER, PERSONAL. M. C. Crosby has returned from Port land. Judge Magulre Is reported to be Im proving. Mr. J. w. Gearhart returned from Portland yesterday. C. J. Curtis and C. S. Gunderson have come In from their Neholem trip. Sheriff Smith and Deputy Weeks have struck out for the tall timber, but Mr. Weeks might as well stay at home, If he has gone electioneering. . The genial J. W. Casey, traveling passenger and freight agent for the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul rail way, was In the city yesterday, looking after the Interests of his road. LOST. THE WATCHES OF THE NIGHT When of the repeated kind experienced by persons troubled with insomnia, soon bring about an alarming condition of the nervous system. The shaking hand, confusion of the brain, lapses of mem ory and loss of appetite indicate, with terrible precision, tne ravages proauceu by loss of sleep, which if unremedied must destroy mental equilibrium alto gether. No better and thorough ner vine exists than Hostetter's Stomach Bitters. Common sense and experience point to Its early and steady use In cases of Insomnia, it strengtnins weaK ana relaxes the tension of overstrained nerves, which, by the way, a resort to unmcdicated stimulants will never do permanently, while the after effect of such excitants Is most prejudicial.
