THE DAILY ASTOniAN, ASTOiiiA, Tilt DAY MORNING. MAY 18, 1894. SEVENTH OnJy three weeks ago the little one of the kindergarten showered with good wishes a little miss Just entering her fifth year, ajid doy before yesterday, It wo may Judec by tlu:lr bright, animated fitces, were no less sincere when sing ing in honor of Miss Gertrude Upshur's seventh birthday: "And let us all remember, As pass the hours away, From now till next December, To help her every day." Each little guest was the recipient of a rebounding ball and dainty sachet bag. the appreciation of which could not be doubted. After a number of songs and games, the little party,-led by the hostess, re paired to the class-room, where lunch eon was served. A beautifully decorated birthday cake, lighted by seven colored candles, was ai prominent table decor ntlon. After again assembling in the play-room In the circle, each was pre sented with a gaily-colored "wind b'ow" to "ipeed the parting- guest," and like magic the bright picture vanished. Those taking part In the afternoon's entertainment were: Gertrude Upshur, May Trenchant, Ada Kendall, Margaret Taylor, Hazel Robb, Winnie and Maude Van Dusen, Carrie Short, Alberta BH den, Hattle Cooper, Lolo and Martha Ford, Alice Wright, Masters Laurence Upshur, Harold Chutter, Thomas Lighter, Philip Cherry, Neal Kendall, Harvey Allen, Henry Sklbbe, Guy San born, Proctor Thompson, Thorburn Ross, Delbert Griffin. Considerable has been said of a sum mer session of the kindergarten. Miss Mason has expressed her willingness to continue the class through the summer if sufficient patronage Is assured. MARINE NOTES. The British ship Barrowdale Is on her way out from England to Vancouver. The steamer R. P. Elmore will be brought In today in tow of the Truckee. The steamer Danube arrived in about C o'clock yesterday morning, and left. up for Portland about five hours later. The City of Kingston, which has been in the hands of the painters and car penters for some time, is out again in the Sound service. The British admiralty will pay in sub sidies this year to the Cunard, White Star, Peninsula, Oriental and Canadian Pacific companies the sum of about $170,000 each. It costs Great Britain $20,000 to scrape the barnacles off the bottom of one of its big men-of-war and repaint It. This Iiob to be done twice a year In the case of nearly every vessel. The steamer Rosalie, which started from San Francisco for the Sound Tues day to go Into competition for the Alas ka business, has been forced back to the home port by an accident to her machinery. It Is reported that if Seattle succeeds in running a line of steam schooners to Central Americai, thus diverting the trade of the Pacific Mall Steamship Company, the latter will meet the oppo sition with a big cut. Telegraph. Yesterday morning the Oriental steam ship Victoria sailed for Yokohama and Hongkong. She had on board 2,000 tons of flour, a large amount of coal, a car load of condensed milk and a large number of psuedo Chinese merchants. Two Chinese ordered deported . from here were among the passengers. Tele graph. BEHIND THE COUNTER. All the ladles of the city were out shopping yesterday, and the proprietors of the different stores looked pleased. If It Is as bright today they will be out again for more goods, and every clerk Is praying that it will not be a rainy Friday. ' " . . ' Who loves a. rainy day? The clerks do not, that is certain. Better a house- full of customers, with the usual ier cent of women with empty purses, who look and price and beg for samples, but never buy, than to stand behind the counter, like "Mariana In the moated grange," and sigh for the customer that t'ometh not. It Is not pleasant to wait on the stray customer who comes In all out of pati ence with a rain that has taken all the crimp out of her hair, and all the sweet ness out of .her temper. She is sure to be hard to please, anl will probably go away with a very unpleasant memory of the occasion and the purchase not because the clerk wasn't obliging, but, because her mind was absorbed in the unpleasant thought of having to return home through the rain. Clerks would rather have a house full of customers, and not get a moment's rest, than to endure the Idleness and utter wearineps of a rainy day. A CALL. Astoria, Of,. May 1st, 1S94. To B. S.
