It Is probably very wide of the truth so wide, Indeed, as to Justify tho ridi cule of those In a position to know I Ho real facts but It Is undenluble that there are many people in Astoria who llrnily believe that the only reason why the town' has not had a road long ag. Is because of certain antagonizing Influ ences In Portland, coupled with the de termination on the part of representa tives of an exIMiug cnrixn-ation that no road shall go to the mouth of the river until kuIiI corporation Itself Is ablo or ready to build It, Now the gentlemen of the subsidy committee are for tho most part, of unusual Intelligence, and j are entitled to nnd doubtless enjoy the i full confidence of the community, and wllh Ihe Interests they tHMijisolvcs have at slake are tno wise nnd slnccro to ad mit of trifling of any kind, but It must be apparent that the tendency to keep the details of what they are doing, or nt least a general Idea of what Is going on, from the public Is well calculated to engender suspicion either that the mom Sers of the committee arc not worklnc. harmoniously together, or that It is be ing imposed upon In some way. It Is i hard for the pvibllo to understand that I the committee may bo only acting from prudential motives; a desire to prevent ! public gossip alxuit lis transactions, out ! of the fear of officious Interference on : the part of some meddlesome outsider. ! Public sentiment Is apt to bo unreason-: able on any given stibjvt. It Is more 1 i often wrong thnn right about any nt-1 tor. The fact should not be overlooked , that the sulwldy committee Is not ex-! actly a public agent; that It is the rep-1 resentatlve of the property interests In-1 volved In the negotiations in progress, and that It might with much propriety reply to some of the criticisms against It by saying It la none of the business public's business. But It la to be hoped the committee will not take this view of the matter, and that In order to avoid misunderstandings, and perhapa the very Interference so much dreaded. It will see fit to Inform the public through the proper channels of anything that ' transpires which may tend to gratify 1 1 Ibtt very natural curiosity and Interest- felt by all In the progress of Its negotia tions, and the probabilities of ultimate success In Its object. No amount of sophistry or mere theoretical argujjjent on the part of free-traders or any other enemy of American progress can overcome the fact that during the thirty years of continuous protective tariff, the wealth of this country reached the enormous total of $48,200,000,000,' despite the, fact that during this period a destructive war was fought entailing a loss to the country, both North and South, of fully one-half tho accumulated wealth In I860. Anil further the odious' appeals of the Populist and Socialist to class and sectional prejudice to the contrary notwithstandlng-every dollar of this great wealth Is today the common her itage of all American citizens, nnd, as a premium on brains and Industry, Is open to the fair competition of every American boy and girl, whether of na tive or foreign-born parents, regardless of race or religious distinction, and whether living In Maine or Florida, Alaski or California. Minister Bayartt has notified the Brit ish government that this country "de sires" to withdraw from the Samoa agreement. Does GrcBham expect any well-informed person to believe any thing else than that this Is in direct re. sponse to the wishes of Great Britain? He will allow his determination to get even with the Republican party to carry him so far that he will find himself In volved In . serious trouble before the close of the Clevelund administration, If he Isn't careful. It Is not generally known, but a strong underhand opposition Is In prog ress In certain sections of tho East, por tlculurly about Chicago, Buffalo, Troy, and even New York City, against any form of government aid or encourage ment to the Nicaragua canal. The reason for this Is obvious; and It fur nishes one of the most powerful argu ments In favor of the construction of the canal, and Its financial success when completed. 1 J 1 As the Oregonlan well points out In Its editorials of the last few days, If there ever was a time In the history of the state when Republicans should abandon the pernicious habit of voting for candidates on other tickets because they are "good fellows" it Is the com ing election. Tho situation Is too seri ous to admit of any sort of excuse for the election of any mun who Is not a straight-out Republican. The field Is now open to Messrs. Bnx ter nnd Dickinson. Let them under stand that the people of Astoria now expect action and that Immediately. DECORATION DAY. Astoria. Or.. April 30. 1894. POLITICAL POINTERS FOR ORE . . OON VOTERS. St. Louis Globe-Democrat. The November elections promise to be a protest with boot on; The Democratic party is a good deal like the regular army mule. It Is known best by its hind sight. Baltimore Sun (Dem.). There were objectionable features In the house tariff bllL They are now added to, and In a discreditable manner. Springfield Journal. Like everything else promised by the Democrats In 1892, "Cleveland and dol lar wheat" must be discounted about 60 per cent. New York Herald (Ind.). Whether the bill can be passed In Us present form and with Its Infamous In come tax rider remains to be seen. But it Is high time to settle the question one way or the other. Brooklyn Eagle (Dem.). As the tariff measure stands it is a virtual acknowledgment on the part of the Democracy that It Is unable to go to the country with a reasonable and fair system of revision. Chicago Inter-Ocean. The acme of humor Is reached when a Democrat attempts to account for the deplorable condition of all our Indus trie and relieve the party from the burden of responsibility thjrifrom. The Democratic congress does- not welcome the Coxeyltes with the warm hospitable greeting which characterized Its greeting of the representatives of the ougar trust. The stock of the Cox eyltes Is not quoted and has no finan cial value. Pittsburg Dispatch. There la little or no hope of the bill becoming a law as It now stands, and while the changes made may Insure Its final ixussnge In the senate, they are also certain to delay the same beyond all present calculations. Troy Times. It (the tariff bill) la the fit product of darkness and secrecy. It Is .the worst measure of Its kind that his ever been submitted to an American congress. It goes far beyond any similar effort in tho direction of free trade and hostility to American Industries. Utlca Herald. The amendments to the tariff bill, to which all but one Democratic senator in the caucus last week promised allegi ance, make practically a new bill. They form a measure which Is further from fulfilling the pledges of the Chicago platform than either tho Wilson or the first senate bill. Newark Advertiser. Another new tariff bill! Shades of William L. Wilson and Grover Cleve land, what Is the Democracy trying to do? The Mills bill was not acceptable and the Wilson bill has practically been rejected for no less than 400 amend ments have already been made, and still there are more to follow. Troy Pifss (Dem.). The tariff bill as reported Is not dan gerous solely because 11 cannot become a law. It Is so radical and destructive In Its provisions that It will be sure to go down under a storm of popular con demnation. That such a measure could pass both houses of congress and re ceive the approval of President Cleve land Is R preposterous proposition. Watertown Times (Dem.). It Is simply a matter of a change of schedules and not principles, and It is a change of schedules In many cases Just sufficient to kill an American industry, or cause a reduction In the wages paid, without at all benefiting the American consumer. It seems to be an effort to do something without doing It; to make a pretense of carrying out the Chicago platform without Incurring Its dangers. Cleveland Leader. A very objectionable feature of the new bill Is the general substitution of ad valorem for specific duties. This will open the way for perpetrating gross frauds by undervaluations. Nothing short of alwolute free trade could more effectually place our markets at the mercy of European producers. In a sea son of over-production when a glutted ntnrket has reduced their prices, they can ship their products to this country and enter them at our ports at figures which will cut down prices of the same articles nil over this country. Fress Dispatch. Composite statistical records and In terviews show that If the proposed tarl.f bill placing lumber on the free list passes congress, there la no question but tha lumber Industry of the Paclllc Coast of the United States will suffer; also. that the lumbermen of Washington. Oregon and California, generally. Irre spective of political affiliations, oppose putting lumber on the free list. Fifty millions of dollars In round numbers represents the capital employed In the lumber Industry of the Pacific Coast, ac cording to figures furnished by an ex pert. It is conceded that British Colum bia will cut seriously Into the California trade, and, perhapa, compete to some extent with Washington and Oregon lumber In the eastern states If lumber la lU,vd on the free list. florth Pacific Bremery JOHN KOPP, Prop.
