During the period of business and financial depression with which the country hns been lately visited, , but now happily ubout over, the vast ac cumulations of eastern capital, repre senting, not as the Popuiuft say, a sys tem of plunder and extortion practiced by that section on the rest of the coun try, but representing the fruits of sev. oral generations of tho mcst frugal and Industrious people the world has ever seen, have been augmented by the with drawn! of lurge sums of money from the no longer profitable and, In some cases, hostile fields of former Investment In the Mississippi valley, and further west ward, until today there Is a larger sum of Idle money In the banks and savings vaults of New Englnnd than at any one time before In the history of the coun try. Every student of economics knows t tint It Is na unnatural for accumula tions of money to lie uninvested, for any considerable length of time, as It Is for water to run up hill, and It will bo but a little while when these great hoards must and will find some outlet. I'nder tho prevailing conditions, there is but one direction In which this money can be reasonably expected to go. While the tide of Immigration was running fat und furious Into the un developed states of Kansas and Ne braska, and that Immediate section, and a wild fever of speculation raged, a market was provided for every surplus dollar In the country. Eastern and Euro' pean capital literally flowed like water Into thowe sections. Great cities sprang up like magic; unnecessary railroads wcw projected and built and gigantic enterprise of all hind were prose cuted, contrary to physical law and natural surroundings, but sustained, for the time being, by sheer force of arti ficial and man-created powers and ener gies. The great natural advantage and matchless resources of Oregon, and the Coast region adjoining, were overlooked and lay peacefully sleeping. But now a new order of things has come; the whole situation ha changed. The great Industrial and business depression has not been an unmixed evil. U has re taught the lessons of caution and pru dence. The Interior states of the union ara t"W known t. he overd.m. sn.l ah. oIiU-Iy incapable of revival. The pmf- Ilgate waste of money and energy wit nessed there will never be repeated. The prospective completion of the Isth mian canal has been the means of di recting the attention of the financial world to the Pacific Const, and Quiet study and Investigation have demon strated that section to be the only safe and promising field for Investment on this continent Before the closo of the noKt decade the Pacific will rival the Atlantic Coast in substantial develop ment and population. Shall Oregon be allowed to lag behind In the great race for prosperity and Improvement now be ing started? It Is to be hoped not, but her people must be alive and alert to the opportunity. They must stamp out the evil of socialism and populism, whioh It can no longer be denied has obtained a foothold within her borders. She must have a sensible system of laws, void of the wild vagaries of the theorist and transcendentallst. Her citizens must show her advantages to the world by some form of well-selected and widely-distributed advertisement She must be kept In the van, along with her sister states, In all educational and religious matters. In Bhort she must shake off the lethargy which her best men know has so long possessed her, a lethargy responsible for many evils which now afflict her. Let her do all this, and she will speedily realize the fruition of her hopes In all the years past In a measure beyond the dreams of the most far-sighted prophet within her boundaries. ' Peffer and Allen, like the busy bee, Improve the shining hour. Each was on deck with his little resolution yes terday. The former wants the senate to Investigate the condition of the couiv try through a committee, while the lat ter wishes the Coxeyltes admitted to the capltol, so they can tell the senate about It. There seems to be a race between these men as to which shall be deemed the bigger demagogue. Ex-Presldent Harrison, in his recent address before the chamber of com merce in Cincinnati, said: "The wealth, energy, enterprise and. wisdom of the American people would bring relief from the general depression. The only pathway of help, however, outside per sonal administration, he declared, led to the ballot box." Mr. Fox Is making a good, but quiet canvass, and will undoubtedly be elect ed 'to the senate by a large majority. It can be safely predicted that no man In that body will be more attentive to offi cial duty, or reflect more credit on the constituency that sends him than Mr. Fox. Judge Horr is undoubtedly right when he 'says the day the Populists triumph In this state, that day every dollar rf foreign capital now'lnvested will begin silently and Inexorably to leave It. With a few speeches lllce that of Judge Horr's lust evening, there will not be a Populist vote left In Clatsop county. No greater calamity can bcfull the good state of Oregon than the election of a Populist legislature. STATE TREASURER'S TICK. NINTH NO- State of Oregon, Treasury Department, Salem, May . 18D4. A GOOD WORD. Mr. J. J. Kell, Sharpsburg, Pa. Dear Sir" 1 am glad to say a good word for Krause's Headache Capsules. After suffering for over thre years with acute neuralgia and Its consequent Insomnia (which seemed to baffle the efforts of some of our best physicians) you suggested this remedy which gave me almost Instant relief. Words full to express the praise I should like to Ustow on Kraui-e's Headache Capsules. Gratefully Yours, MUS. U. It HOLMES. Montrose, P. For sale by Chas. Rogers, Astoria, Or., sole agent. STANDS WITHOUT A RIVAL. Gentlemen: I hv been troubled with very sever headaches for years, and have taken a great many different remedies, but have never found any thing to give me as speedy and per"1 nent cure as Krause's Headache Cap sule. In my opinion they stand with out a rival; they have cured me In oxery case. JNO. N. WILK1K. X Adams ave.. West. Detroit, alien. K-r by Chas. K.-.scrs. 5C! Astoria, Oreiroa. OREGON NOTES. Diphtheria hns been raging over nt The Dalles for some time, but Is now abating. A musical revival at Jacksonville has brought "Come Where the Lilies Bloom So Fair" to the surface. Florence Is making her brags that none of her citizens have been so loyal as to want to Join Coxey's army. The author It os at The Dalles have al lowed the "Industrials" to pltoh camp right alongside of a powder house. One dollar and fifty cents a head Is what Allen & Nye sold 9,000 head of Crook county sheep to Chicago parties for. The town druggist of Dufur has been trying to get on top by riding a bicycle for the amusement of bis fellow citi zens. " Clans Vehrs, of Sodovllle, Is milking 30 cows and sending butter to Portland, where he gets CO cents a roll all the year round. 4 The brick bullion fromi the Golden Eagle mine, sent down to Sart Francis co, netted $1,737, which was $100 more than the. owners expected.. The seeds have been planted for a revolution over at Salem. The States man has set up a howl because Salem gets no new postofflce building this year. Harry Lowman, the Populist, was In Baker City Sunday night, trying to build a fence around the office of clerk that would be horse high, bull strong and pig tight. Jackson county is. getting her singers together for a big Fourth of July cele bration, and "The Star Spangled Bon ner" permeates the web and woof of Ashland musical society. Bandon la as pleased as a boy with his first boots. Her citizens have hus tled around and secured a woolen mill equal to any on the Coast, and the ma chinery is there to prove it. Ashland was so tickled to death be cause Sandow, the modern Sampson, patswd through that city on the train going north that the revival then in session there Was forgotten. , The Heppner Gazette says that Its printers have a bad habit of coming up to the trough every Saturday night and demanding their pay. So it warns its delinquent subscribers to pay up. Rev. Mr. Shangle, of the M. 'E. church South, will soon start In to put Chris tianity's Iron heel on the cringing neck of satan by holding a camp meeting the 24th of this month at Ashland. Shades of Liberty! A descendant of "Washington" Is working on the streets of Baker City under boll and chain, and watched by an officer named "Wolf." Sons of the Revolution, go and get him out of Umbo. A hardware drummer could unload a stock of bootjacks at Florence. The neighbors of B. F. Alley have unloaded theirs at the members of the "Thomas Concert Troupe" which meets nightly on his back fence. Now that the bock beer season has opened at Baker City, the Jays from Idaho think the only way that they can prove they have been having a good time is to go home In a choir car and slap one another and address each other as "sport." Pendleton Is disappointed because a housewarmlng, to end with a dance, Is not to celebrate the opening of its new scouring mill. The manager Is relying on his fatal gift of beauty to carry him through the Indignation felt by the lo dles over their disappointment. - 1 EXPENSIVE .ECONOMY. Some people begrudge the little money that an Alllcock's Porous Plaster coBts, and then when they are racked with pain from a lame back, or from the soreness arising from a cold, they will spend any amount of money to relieve the pain. If they only had one of those world-renowned plasters on hand they would be saved a vast amount of suffer ing and be considerably richer. At the llrst sign of stiffness of the joints apply one of these plasters without any delay. The soreness will be greatly relieved at once and soon disappear entirely. It will be money saved to have them on hand, to say nothing of the comfort they bring. Brandreth's Pills contain no Irritat ing matter. FOR OVER FIFTY YEARS .
