"The McKinley bill or the "Wllaon 1.111 is not the Important issue at present. The vital question at stake bi the pres ence of this almost Intangible and unol- uorved jrang of bribers, whose work is seen by Its effwts. "The tariff la a mutter of policy, and Its settlement seems to be as far off us ever; the lobby Is a matter of the life or death of this alleged government for the people, and its settlement cannot be postponed." The Messrs. Browne, of New York City, who are in Astoria for the pur pose of making arrangements for the Immediate resumption of work on the Nehalem branch railway, have the ap pearance of being very much In earnest, and it Is the pinion of leading business men, In a position to know, that they have nil the evidence necessary to es tablish their financial backing and abili ty to carry out any contract made with them. THE BITElt BITTEN. The Democrats In conirreis nro In a state of phrensy bordering on distrac tion over the tlx they find themselves Ir with tho tnrllT bill. They thought U" show their contempt for the Republic ans, and at tho same deprive them of their constitutional right to a fair and free discussion und amendment of the bill, by securing a secret agreement among themselves on the bill before It was roKrted to the senate, and then by watching their chance force a prema ture iniHsuge of the measure by some such parliamentary trick us was played with the seigniorage bill, nnd thus en Joy with keen relish the helpless rase of the Republicans tit the trickery and Injustice put uion theia by this viola tion of all precedent nnd tho decencle: of ordinary parliamentary practice. They have, however, been cuught by their own trap, The laugh Is upon them, nnd right richly have they de served the utter 1m in I Hit tlon und dis grace of their position. Scandal and dis sension have followed them all the way through their nefarious scheme, ami some of their leaders can never hope to llvj down the Infamy of the repeated lies they have been forced to toll on tlu floor of the senate, to say nothing of tin charges of corruption nnd dishonesty which have been freely whinnered around the hotels and drawing rooms ol Washington, Every day or two there Is a shower of telegrams from Washington that the Democracy are agreed, about a tariff bill. This does well until some one calls for particulars. Then no one can tell whether the reform Is for revenue or deficiency for an Income tax or a sugar tax. The destitution of tho Dem ocratic, party when business principles are concerned must now be apparent to every man with a gmln of sense. There seemB to bo at least one bonn (ldo proposition now pending before the subsidy committee, and wihout intend ing any reflection or crltlclBm on any body, it may be said that the people are laboring under a great deal of Sus pense about tho railroad matter, and have a right to expect some tangible development without much further de lay. There are good consistent Democrats all over the state of Oregon who Intend to vote for Republican candidates for senator and representatives, out of sheer concern for what will Inevitably happen If tho Republicans fall to have x good safe majority on Joint ballot In the next legislature. A THAW. Tho farmhouse fire Is dull and black, The trailing fcinoke rollrf white and low Along the fields till by the wood It banks and floats unshaken, slew; The scattering sounds Beem near nnd loud, The rising sun is clear and white. And In the air a mystery stirs Of wintry hosts in coward flight. Anon the south wind breathes across Tho froze earth Its bonds to break," Till at tho call of life returned It softly stirs but half awake. The cattle clamor in the stalls. The house dog barks, he knows not why. The cock crows by the stable door. The snow birds, somber-hued, go by. The busy housewife on the snow To bleach lays out her linen store. And scolds because with careless feet The children track the spotless floor. With nightfall comes the slow warm rain. The purl of waters fills the air. And save where roll the gleaming drifts The fields lie sullen, block and bare. Harper's Weekly. JJoPth Paenic Bremeny JOHN KOrP, Prop. Bohemian Lager Beer And XX PORTER. All orJtrt promptly attenJcd to THE QUEEN'S WIFELY ENCE. OBEDI- Queen Victoria has no sympathy with the advanced and revolting wives who refuse to acknowledge the supremacy of the husband, even to the extent of declining to merge their maiden names in those of the men whom they con descend to marry. Her majesty's view of the question Is the same today as It, was when the Archbishop of Canterbury asked whether, upon the occasion of her marriage to the prince consort, the queen would prefer that the word 'obey" should be omitted from the ser vice, when her majesty Instantly re plied, "I wish to be married as a wom an, not as a queen." The (Salem) Sign. Japanese novelties and fancy dry good, can be had at half price, at the store of Wing Lee, next to Olsen's cigar store. It Is a leading topic of gossip in Washington that certain Democratic senators are making Immense fortunes on the vacillations of tho stock mar ket, due to the uncertainty nnd con flicting statements about the tariff bill. DID YOU EVER MEET A TRULY GOOD MAN? No doubt you think you have, but we'll wager a dime or so he did not have the rheumatism. Jf he did, he swore occasionally, and no man can be truly good who swears occasionally. Health, nerve tranquility and morality are apt to go hand In hand. Painful pasmnmc diseases like rheumatism and neuralgia ruin the temper, make one morose, peevish and rebellious. This Is a sad fact, but It Is none the less true. iMve away the pain, mollify the tem per, restore tranquility of mind In cases of rheumatism and neuralgia with Hos tettir'n Stomach Bitters, an anodyne and tonle of comprehensive range und effect. Says a, prominent Washington paer on the reocnt statement of Senator Har ris on the compromise of the tariff bill: "Such compromises, nay Senator Harris, Is the nivwwry evil attached to all (rreat reforms. Some people begrudge the little money that an Alllcock's Porous Plaster costs, and then when they are racked with pain from a lame back, or from the soreness arising from a cold, they will siiend any amount of money to relieve the pain. If they only had one of those world-renowned plasters on hand they would be saved a vast amount of suffer ing and be considerably richer. At the first sign of stiffness of the Joints apply one of these plasters without any delay. The soreness will be greatly relieved at once and soon disappear entirely. It will be money saved to have them on hand, to say nothing of the comfort they bring. ilrandreth's Pills contain no Irrltat lnc matter. ASTORIA WOOD YARD D. a 1). 1.
