A cru'scr like the Kearsarge does well enough ah long range, but when she runs on a reef, then comes the tug. Booth's cunnery sent a car of salmon east last night via the steamer Tele phone and the Northern Paclllc rail road. John Kopp Is having a new cylinder head, valve and piston rod put In his ammonia engine by the Astoria Iron Works. Now doth the merry foot-ball crank His lunKS with air Inflate, While v'ondroim noises loud and rank Will soon tell of his ecstatJe stote. Your last) chance to see the train of cars In actual motion, In "Under the Gaslight," Is at the matinee and per formance tonight at Liberty hall. Astoria, has so many good politicians that sometimes one gives up hope of ever seeing a railroad, the opening of all our streets, or good country wagon roads. There Is a great deal said about small IMM-sonB putting strong persons to sleep, but ono thoroughbred Astoria Ilea can keep the strongest man In the world awake all night. A large sturgeon on the Union Pacific dock attracted the attention of quite a number of the Columbia's ' passengvrs yesterday. It being the first some of them had ever Been. Mr. Austin J. Roberts, of Oakland, Col., who Is on his wuy home from Ta comu, called at the Afltorian office yes terday. In the two hours he had ashore he claims he saw more life and activity than could be seen in a day In Tacoma. Miss lone Dtinlap, the enthusiastic klndergartner, who lectured before the teachers attending the Institute meet ing, will, as a compliment to Miss A. C. Mason, give a talk ukh the kindergar ten work at Miss Warren's school at 2 o'clock today. The operation performed Thursday on M. A. Nowlen for the removal of two ibdonilnal nbscessos, while a success ful one from a surgical standpoint, was, we regret to say, unavailing. The young man died from the effect of the shock yesterday afternoon, at 4 o'clock. There are some funny things In this world. Corbett won over $8,000 a minute In his light wlt.h Mitchell, while the average preacher Is satisfied If he gets 80 er cent of his tnoo a year; and now oomea a New York paper which an nounces the commencing of the racing season with an advertisement in the want column for a young man quick In figures to assist a book maker on the race truck; salary, "six dol lars a day." Itlght juijolning thla ad vertisement. Is another which reads as follows: "Wanted A young nuin quick In figures to assist a bookkeeper In an importing house. Salary, first two years, $5 a week." Is there any wonder that the youth In the land run so much to sporting and so lll.tle to Christianity. PERSONAL. Mr. Alex. J. Megler and wife left on the steamer yesterduy for a San Fran cisco visit. C. II. Leoilbetter and family, of Port land, were passengers on the Columbia yesterday for Portland. John Montelth, a former Astorlan. passed through the city yesterday on ills way to San Francisco, V. R. McKenxle, formerly travelling auditor for the Union Pacific system, 1ms moved to his cottnge at the beach for the summer. Captain Archie Pease Is now acting aa pilot on the ocean steamers between here and Portland In place of Captain Patterson, who Is taking a vacation In California for his health. The following passengers left out on the Columbia from here yesterday: w. A. Johnson, A. J. Megler and wife, of the Occident Hotel; A. L. Denlo, J. Q. Helm, Mrs. Jas. Burke and twoi chil dren, T. R. ltruyton, L, E. Howes, and nine steerage. WILL SPEAK AT FISHER S HALL. Under the auspices of the Republican Suite Central Committee, the Hon. K. BROWNE IS IN EARNEST He Deposits $5,000 With the Law yers Fulton to Clear Off Ex isting Liens. Late last evening It was learned that the first eastern money Astoria has seen from a railroad source was a New York draft for J5.000 given to the Ful. ton Brothers by Edward Browne yes terday to lift a Judgment they held against the Astoria and Portland rail road. Mr. Browne was hunted up, and In an Interview stated that he would not go Into specific details, but the finances are all arranged! for back east, and that he Is here to take up the Nehalem route road and complete it, and expects to stay hero until all the arrangements nre made and work lxgun on the road. NEXT WEEK. Tho adjourned February term of the circuit court nwets next Monday, and we may ex pee t our country cousins to be with us, either aa plaintiffs, defend ants, witnesses or Jurymen, for awhile again. A SURE THING. The fishermen, who are receiving the credit for the largest number of pounds of fish are the ones who use the nine and a quarter inch mesh nets. They state that the large fish cannot get caught in the nets of smaller mVsh. HARD LUCK. When the Islander was opposite Booth's cannery yesterday she ran Into a fisherman's net and cut It in two. If the loud thunder that emlnated from the net's owners could have sunk the vessel, the river channel would now be obstructed. ON THE STUMP. Mr. C. J. Curtis, Republican candi date for the legislature, will open up his campaign by speaking ab Hare on Wednesday, the 9th; Knapp. Friday, tho 11th; West port, Saturday, the 12th, and Olney, Monday, the 14th. Mr. A. It. Kanuga accompanies him on his tour. A WISE PURCHASE. St. Mary's hospital has added to Its operating room a full set of surgical in struments, which were purchased from the celebrated Tieman's, New York. The addition of such a complete outfit will be of great advantage to visiting sur geons, who will not now be compelled to bring their Instruments with them when they have patients at 'the hos pital. A GROCERYMAN'S REMARKS. Forgetful women need to be reminded that at this season of the year they must empty the contents of a can of vegetables as soon as opened. Some cooks open a can of corn or tomatoes an hour before lb Is needed. Many of the reported Accidents through the country, due to the eating of canned gojds, might be traced to carelessness In the kitchen. A dangerous acid often forms ly the chemical action of the air upon the soldering of the can. SPRING IS COME. The crafty old rancher whose chief object in life 1b to refiort each year the first mess of new potatoes borne grown," gnth about with a sweet smile on his face. By which tokens, all and singular. Jointly and severally, we feel, we believe, that May first has'eoine and gone, and that spring Is here. The old "herbman" from off the hills Is making his rounds with a basket of primitive blood purifier made by a re ceipt that his grandfather got from an old Indian Medicine Man. The young man whose first spring of wedded life this Is may be seen going home with new hoe, rake and fork, and with an air which tells that next fall the market will be fairly glutted with garden truck. ON EASY STREET. , The Paclflo Can Company, of this city, has made made a contract with the Zimmerman Can Ofiener Company to manufacture their patent can exclusive ly on tho Pacific Coast. Mr. Frank Klnsey, (he vice president of the Zimmerman Company, spent a month here, with the head machinist, Mr. Nelson Troyer, perfecting the ma chine diett, as the patent Is a new one, and the Pacific people are the first to Introduce them on the tops of salmon cans. It must be a good thing, for the As toria factory have already received or ders for over S.o)0,000 cans that have the patent attachment, and these cans cost $2.50 more on a thousand than the ordinary cans. Now, If the Paclllc pay Mr. Klnsey's company a royalty of $1 on each 1.0H. why his company Is strictly In It, for at that rate on the or ders mentioned the royalties would amount to $25,000. Somehow those Chi cago fellows always land on Easy street. ANNOUNCEMENT. I am not a candidate for county re corder on any ticket, and would n accept the nomination If offered me. J. Ii. LAND WORTHY.
