A BRAND NEW POSTMASTER.
Postmaster Hare went down to Sea
side yesterday to assist a few ex-post
masters and their bondsmen to transfer
the Seaside office to the latest postmas
ter, J. H. Johanson, who takes charge
today.
TAKEN TO THE HOSPITAL.
The steamer Columbia steamed Into
Astoria yesterday with a very sick, sec
ond steward, who was suffering from a
severe attack of tonsllltla. A physician
was called and the patient taken, to St.
Mary's hospital.
HANDS OFF.
A bloody Britisher In the city has
very nearly started the false report that
the American girls can't dawnce as well
as the Englls'sh girls, by reason of their
weak ankles. He had better keep his
hands off this subject.
ADJOURNED.
Last night was the regular night for
council meeting, but some of the mem
bers Btopped so long on their way down
explaining how the "fool thing" was
done the day before that no quorum
was declared, and the meeting adjourn
ed until next Tuesday.

A British nobleman, who was sued
for breach of promise, Is reported to
have declared that it was Impossible forj
him to contradict a lady, and therefore
he would not, deny that he had made
the promise; but he insisted that the
lady had exaggerated the value of his
affections, bud that that value was a
fain question for a Jury. The lady re
covered 1 per cent or so of her original
claim, and the mulcted nobleman de
clared that the cross-examination of her
by his counsel was amp'"' worth the
money.
