SOME OF THE REASONS. While the steamer Protection, of the Detrick line, had 200 Iras of general merchandise for Portland on her last trip and 29 tons for Kalama, she had only two tons for Astoria. The Detrick line people feel very much put out at the small freight business given them by Astoria's merchants, claiming "that their line was the first to reduce rates to the present tariff, and while it is true that the Union Pacific steamers met the reduced rate, yet if the Detrick line should give Astoria the go-by there ls no doubt whatever the rates would a once go back to the old figures." Conceding that the complaint of the Detrick line is based on good grounds, they should remember that the Union Pacific Company steamers are always on time. It has well equipped docks: it is a powerful corporation, and then last, but not leasU that it is strongly represented here in the person of Mr. George W. Lounsberry, Its accommo dating agent. Mr. Lounsberry Is a hard worker, a first-class solicitor and a man who, having got a shipper to once use the line represented by him, works Just as hard to retain him as a permanent customer. These may be some of the ways of accounting for what looks to the Detrick people like unfair discrimination. NEW SUIT. Suit was filed yesterday in the circuit court by Martin Ryan vs. Christen Henry.
