THE DMLY ASTOMAN, ASTOlllA, ' SUNDAY MORNING, APRIL 22, 1894. AROUND TOWN. Listen to the church bells and heed their call this morning. The "Junior Order" Is a new frater nity, lately organized in Astoria. Straw hats and strawberries made their first appearance In the city yester day. Foun passengers purchased tickets for Portland from here on the Columbia yesterday. The Bhlp Hawksdule passed out yes terday afternoon, laden with wheat, bound for Limerick. This pleases the train hands nnd they ride free. Over ninety cabin passengers arrived up on the Columbia from San Fran Cisco yesterday, this being one of the largest passenger lists of the season. The Washington Star says the United States has 800 lights upon Its coasts. Thirty of them are displayed from light ships, the others shine from light houses. . An $80 lot for J2. The horse didn't seem to mind it, nnd the steer wasn't consulted. Mayor 'Mayson, of Portland, en route from San Francisco to his home, spent an hour In our city yesterday morning. He expressed surprise at the activity of our streets. He was accompanied by Mrs. Mason. Fresh fish and poultry at Welcome's Market, next to Foard & Stokes'. When two women meet and are friends they kiss, but when men meet, no matter how friendly they are, they do not. This Is because the men can find something better to kiss and the women can't. The best we have heard yet is that Mr. A. G. Spexarth sells a fine Amen can-made mandolin for $25, with a con tract to furnish 15 lessons by a flrst cless teacher, and also guarantees the pupil to read and play music correctly. Hill's First addition Is located In the centre of the city. Lots are now selling In It for $2. Teething babies und feverish il.ililrei . need 8t-e-e-dman's Soothing Powders. ' Try them. Astoria la a "more or less" musical community, and fosters the "arts," but the kind of music thrown In with some of Its beer, about 1 o'clock In the morn ing, can be dispensed with. Drinking to slow fiddling is acceptable only in the highest development of the art. They have an ordinance at Salem which provides for the publication of a person's name as a common drunkara, :and making it an offense for any one to furnish him liquor thereafter. The other day one such unfortunate and the companion who gave him to drink were each arrested and sentenced to ten days in Jail. Only a few more days left to secure a fine, $10, Crayon Portrait by ordering one dozen cabinets, at Crow's Gallery. A six-horse power upright engine and boiler, almost new, for sale cheap. For particulars apply at this office. II. Ekstrom has fixed his prices for jewelry to suit the times, and the latest novelties can be secured at the cost of material used in the manufacture. Some one suggests that the churches of Astoria hang a slate in the vestibule, bo that young ladies may register be fore they enter. The young men, who corns round Just before closing time, could then consult the slate, instead of being obliged, to peek in at .the doors and windows to ascertain if their girls lire Inside. They are nob selfish, and are fixing up their house for in vited guests also. Those so fortunate as to hold invitations can rely on a pleas ant evening. ASTORIA'S "RESOURCES." Now It is known why the ladles of Astoria have such beautiful com plexions. An authority says that damp, foggy weather Is good for the skin, making it soft and fair, while dry, windy weather reddens and toughens It. This should be regarded as one of the most Important In the list of "Astoria's Resources" as sent out by the chamber of commerce, and it would prove a drawing card, for what woman does not wish a clear complexion. EMERSON, THEN BROWNING. A lady- says that when sho has any hard, disagreeable work to do about the house, she runs Into the parlor and reads an extract from Emerson, and thinks about It while she is doing the druggery, and It seems so much easier. Because a woman's hands must be oc cupied with the scrubbing brush and rolling pin Is no reason why her mind should be kept on the same level. If he doesn't Interfere with the work, by all means let Mr. Emerson, step right Into the kitchen. For a delicious plate of pure Ice cream, go to C. B. Smith, the Ice Cream Dealer. Ice Cream Soda a specialty. Pri vate parlors for ladies.' 483 Third street. THE RAILROAD MEETING. The general committee had a meeting yesterday afternoon at 2 o'clock with Messrs. Campbell and Stanton. Xt Is' reported on the street that these gen tlemen claim they have the money raised to build the road, and that they want a 20-day option on the subsidy, and they also wish to take all papers down east and submit them to their at torneys. As every one on tne commit tee seemed close-mouthed, It was diffi cult to obtain any authentic news what ever. The proposed "Apron Sale," by the ladies of Grace Church, promises to be one of the most unique and interesting affairs that ever occurred In Astoria. A SAD DAY. This is a sad Sunday for Peter Nel son, a longshoreman, who lives up on Jackson street, between Court and As- tor. A week ago his 14-year-old son, Nels, the eldest of eight children, hurt himself trying to lift too great a weight while at work In the Pacific Can fac tory, and yesterday he died from the effects of the injury. Mr. Nelson has the sympathy of the entire community in his sorrow. It is said Nels had al ways been a good and dutiful son, and It Is hard for his father to give him up. Ohls had a birthday either, the 20lh or the 21st of this month, and bis friends came around to his house with a bass drum, comet, kazoo and other musical Instruments to serenade him at the unholy hour of 3:30 o'clock yester day morning. Just when Alex, needed sleep most. If the anniversary came on Friday, the 20th, the neighbors who were made aware of the celebration claim the serenade were too late In the night, and If It was yesterday, the lst, they cams too early In the morn ing, and played the kazoos too long. Olsen has 29 brands of clear Havana cigars and he will give you a better ci gar for 10 cents than you can get for IS cents at any other place. 627 Third street THE RESCUE CLUB. REPUB- Editor) Astortan Dear Sir: I should like to reply to the article written by "Another Republican" In regard to the Populist candidate for county superin tendent. I would suggest that If he were better acquainted with Mr. II. S. Lyman he never would have made the statement, 'Any one who has no better knowledge of affairs than to be a Populist has no business in the office of county superin tendent," for no one can deny Mr. Ly man's deep thought on all subjects, his ability and faithfulness In discharging all duties entrusted to his care, his broad mlndeduess and his especial work in the schools under his direction. In the building up of schools he works for best and lasting results. The scathing reference to "country peddling," etc.; is entirely uncalled for. His appreciation is felt In the school room, and I sincerely hope it will be for years to come. A THOUGHTFUL READER. PERSONAL. Samuel Wherry, of Nehalem, was lo the city yesterday. Mr. W. W. Like the application of Ice to the Kmall of your back, Is the sensation produced by the chill that precedes the fever of malaria. Then comes the roast. Ing stage, when every vein throbs and Is scorched as If with liquid fire. Then you well nigh dissolve In exhausting perspiration that leaves you as limp as a wet dish rag. These alternating tor ments are not remediable permanently wit.h quinine, which Is, moreover, a most damaging cumulative poison. Hos tetter's Stomach Bitters drives out the foe and repels Its further attacks. It Is the leading medicinal safeguard against malaria all over the continents of North and South America, Guate mala, the Isthmus of Panama. Mexico and Australia. It regulates the liver, stomach, bowels and kidneys, enriches the blood, and promotes apietlte, sleep end digestion.
