NOT TO BE UNSEATED.
Washington. April 18. The feeling
among leading members of the house of
representaUves is that no action could
be taken concerning the Breckenridge
scandal, although one of the best law
yers In the house said the constitution
gave ample authority to do so. The
precedents cited, however, deal almost
exclusively with offenses of a personal
nature committed on tho floor of the
house. Some of the members Inter
viewed declared that no action can be
taken on the numerous petitions which
are said to be on the way to the house,
demanding the expulsion of Brecken
ridge. It is pretty generally admitted
that no action on the petitions will be
taken further than allowing them to be
read,
FAITH CURIST DEAD.
Portland, April 18. Mrs. George H.
"Williams, wife of ex-United States At
torney General Williams, died at her
home In this city today. She has been
in feeble health for some time, and her
death was not unexpected. The deceased
was a conspicuous figure In Washing
ton society for ten years, while her hus
band was- United States senator from
this state and attorney general In Presi
dent, Grant's cabinet. In recent years
he became a convert to the faith-cure
belief, and spent most of her tlmo in
that work. Her spacious residence In
this city for the past seven years has
been thrown open twice a day to the
faith curists, who held their meetings
there. She was born In Shepardtown,
Virginia, in 1832.
OBAIN CONGRESS ADJOURNS.
Wichita, Kas., April 18. The National
Grain Congress, which has been In ses
sion here during) the past two days, ad
journed this evening, to meet again at
New Orleans the second Tuesday In
June. Strong resolutions were passed
throwing off the yoke of the east and
advocating the closest commercial rela
tions between the west and south.
CLOSED ITS AFFAIRS.
' San Francisco, April 18. The cltlaens'
executive committee for the relief of
the unemployed wound up Its affairs to
day. During the past winter the com
mittee paid to laborers 192,000 raised by
subscription. The laborers were em
ployed In tho road constructions at
Golden Gate park,

' The Hrltlsh ship Hngmlnle, wheat
laden, left Portland last night, bound
down.
It Is said at Snn, Francisco that the
steamer Mexico will soon be put on the
Puget Sound route, In place of the
Queen. The latter vessel will undergo
an overhauling: and prepare fur her
summer excursions to Alaska, which
will begin early In June.
The Panama railroad has chartered
the steamer Saturn to carry freight be
tween San Francisco and the Isthmus,
It is stated that the Panama company
will operate three steamers on this
OoaaU to take the place of the North
American Navigation Coniuny's ves
sels.
The steamer Point Lonia came lu
Monday with 56 tons of freight from
San Francisco, She now has competi
tion on Gray's harbor, as the steamer
romoKllR, of the Slude Lumber Com
lny, has begun carrying freight. She
has been carrying lumber to Frisco for
some time, but not until last trip did
she carry freight. The Point Loom has
made a cut In passeiigiT rates to $12.50
for the round trip to Flrsco, or 17.25

a Latin word, signifying commander.
In the sense of a naval commander it
was introduced into Europe by the Ve
netians In the 14th century, The Eng
llxn lord admiral has the government
of the navy. The admiral of the fleet
is the next highest officer; the vice ad
miral and the rear admiral follow. The
admiral's flag is displayed at the main
top-gollant-mast head, the vice ad
miral's at the fore-top-gullant-mast
head, and the rear admiral's at the
mlxnen-top-gallaiit-mast head.

Clatsop, April 17, 1891
Editor Astorlan: The pupils of Clat
sop school observed Arbor Day, In ac
cordance with tho Oregon school low,
Friday afternoon, April 13. The Inclem
ency of the weather prevented a large
attendance, but those who were present
Ji Intd heartily In the work and seemed
to enjoy the exercises throughout.
The following program was rendered:
Recitation, "Welcome," Ethel Water
house; reading of law concerning Ar
bor Day, Paul West; song, "The Leaf
lets," school; recitation, "Somebody's
Mother," Lena Ober; reading, "The No
bility of Labor," George Adams; recita
tion, "Ten Little Friends," Harriet
Waterhouse; reading, "Facts About
Trees," Henry Ober; recitation, "Help
ing Mamma," Virginia Carnahan; read
ing, "An Indignation Meeting," Ed,
ward Lowe; recitation, "Woodman,
Spare That Tree," Nettle Adams; read
ing, "Heads," Thos. Roberts; song, "We
Plant the Trees," school; reading, "The
Modern Fraud," Will Adams; recita
tion, "Boys Wanted," Fred Ober; reci
tation, "Birds In a Nest," Mary Rob
erts; recitation, "I Wish," Carl Ober.
An address on the schools of Ger
many was given by Mr. Henry Ober
and one on the schools of England by
Mr. Alex Tagg. Mr. D. F. Stafford
favored the audience with a vocal solo
with violin accompaniment.
The school and visitors then worked
Industriously for. an hour setting out
forty-three trees of various kinds. Dur
ing the. time the work of setting out
trees was going on, the ladles had pre
pared a sumptuous repast In the school
house, and all were afterward Invited to
partake of such dainties as only the
Clatsop ladles know how to provide.
Luncheon over, the pupils marched
to the trees and three trees were
named, one In honor of Washington by
Tappan Stafford, one In honor of Whit
tier by Parker West, and one In honor
of Joslah West by Mr. Ober.
The pupils of Seaside school had ac
cepted an invntation to be present In a
body, but were prevented by the con

UNDECIDED YET.
In answer to a letter of Inquiry sent
to Mr. FV At. Warren, of Cathlamet, re
garding the salmon cannery at the nar
rows, which burned down recently, and
of which he was the owner, he writes
that It hns not as yet been decided
whether or not the cannery will be re
built, or what will be done. He adds
that arrangements were pending to
lease the cannery to the Alaska Pack
ing Association for the canning season,
and that it was to have been In active
operation. The cannery, he says, was

THfc) ISLANDER'S CHINESE.
Forty-five of the ninety-five China
men on the steamer Islander intended
for this port have been formally landed
within the past two days. They are an
unusually Intelligent looking set. The
officers of the steamer have been very
courteous and accommodating to the
government officers, and have rendered
them all the assistance In their power.
Mr. Charles W. Johnson, special agent
:f the treasury department, called here

main until the Islander goes up the
i Iver.
COME TO HIS SENSES.
A Populist was heard to make the
remark a short time ago that he
thought the railroad would be built this
summer. When asked why he thought
so, he said the Republicans are making
such gains In the east that he ran see
a change In financial affulrs already.
He says If the Republicans are victori
ous In Oregon next June the railroad
will surely be built to Astoria this year.
This Populist has just woke up, and a
good many more will before June. Ne

- The coroner's Jury called to Investi
gate the Identity and cause of death of
the body found below Sand Island daV
before yesterday, d?elded It to be the
remains of the second mate of the Brit
ish bark Holywood, who was drowned
while that- vessel was at this port by
falling into the river on attempting to
go aboard at night In a state of intoxication.
