Soon after dropping anchor she was boarded by the health officer, who made some preliminary examination of her papers and people, but owing to the lateness of the hour of her arrival he decided to defer a more extended examination until this morning. Her papers show a clear bill of health, but on account of the prevalence of contagious diseases at. some of the porta at which she touched, it was decided to hold her well out In the harbow until after the final inspection this morning, and in the meanwhile not to permit any of her people to land. While engaged in his rounds on the vessel, very much to his astonishment, the doctor ran across a certain citizen of Astoria, who, being unable to con trol his exhlliaration at the sight of the flag of the ship's nationality, pro cured a boatman and boarded the ves sel without waiting for the officer's permission. The unhappy consequence of which piece of folly was that the aforesaid citizen, under the peremptory orders of the officer, was obliged to ac cept. the hospitality of the vessel until the completion of the doctor's some what tedious inspection this morning. NEARLY FINISHED. Th. Olsen's new residence, on Seventh street, is nearly completed, and Mr. Olsen hopes to occupy It some time next month. LOOKS INCONSISTENT. Ten thousand men in the Pennsyl vania coke regions are on a strike be cause of disagreement with their em ployers. Ten thousand or more are on strike In Chicago for the same reason. Some other thousands employed In the bituminous coal mines of the entire country have been ordered by the head centres of their organizations to quit on the 21st. And yet armies of un known thousands, who have no work of any kind to quarrel with, are march Ing on Washington to tell congress why It is that work is so hard to find. The situation Is a peculiar one. Exchange. THE OATS ARE PLANTED. Mr. P. Peterson, a farmer from near Stella, was In the city yesterday. He says most of the oats have been sown in his neighborhood, and he Is only awaiting good weather to put in his potatoes. He has over 200 sacks of po tatoes on hand from his last year's crop, which he would have brought in to sell long ago if the roads had been passable. GONE TO WORK IN ALASKA. The Union -Pacific steamer Columbia sailed for San Francisco yesterday morning.
