LUMBER GOES IP A RAISE OP TWO DOLXAfcS A THOUSAND. Reasons fur the Advance The State Lohcs by the Combination' Act. The combination in the lumber busi ness made Itself felt yesterday, says the San Francisco Chronicle, when the price of material furnished the state advanced $2 per thousand. This was not unexpected, and another raise may be looked for In a day or two. There has not been much lumber coming to San Francisco, for the rea son that the market could not stand It. During; the depression last year It was Impossible to get money on gilt edged security, and the lumber men, being pressed, had to dispose of the cut material at any figure. Lumber was crowded Into San Francisco and sold below the cost of cutting, let alone Hhlpplng It. But this condition of affair- hn changed, and during the last few weeks Oukland creek has been nearly cleared of the fleet of Bteam schooner which has filled it since last summer. The lumber business had fallen flat before that time, as there was no de mand anywhere. The Australian busi ness, which was an Invaluable assist ance to Puget Sound, was shut off on account! of the financial depression In the colonies. The building boom In Southern California had died out, and there was, besides, no demand at all for cargoes oft the coast. During the past few weeks all this has been changed. Several vessels have been sent to the Sound to load for Liver- nool. Australia and the coast of Africa, The ships Kennebec and Commodore have dropped out of the coal trade carry lumber abroad, the former now being at the Sound and the latter hav insr lef. for there yesterday. ' This movement niakes a better feel lnar among the shipowners, for it Is bringing out vessels which have been lying Idle at some remote anchorage for months. The charter of the Will amette as a tender to the Behring Sea fleet also makes a hole In the coast ni m.pt ami has brousht out the barks Sumatra, McNear and Alex. Mc Nell. The Prussia, which has also been laid up for a long time, hus been put In commission again for the lumber business. Harbor Commissioner Bassett, presi dent of the board, In speaking of the Increase In the price of lumber, said that It was expected, after the com munication from the Golden Gate Lunv her Company. "Blade & Co. were not tired of the flKht." said Mr. Bassett "but the other companies called It off. The fight has been a great saving t the state, and lumber will never again go up to the old figures of 115, $18 and $22 a thousand. It may go up to $12 a thouBuml, but that will be the limit There has been a movement la the lumber business, and If there were any hlir Inrreiw In orlces there are only too many dealers waiting for a chance to furnish material to the state. TO BB CONTINUED. Milwaukee, April 10. The Judge Jen kins Investigation by the house sub committee of Judiciary came to a sud den end, so far as Milwaukee Is con cerned, at 6 o'clock tonight. All the witnesses were examined, and as there was no documentary evidence to gi over, there wus nothing else to do, and the affair will now be continued In Washington. KKCK1VER8 TO RESIGN.
