THE DAILY ASTOKIAN, ASTORIA, TUESDAY MORNING, APRIL 10, 1894 . , A HARP SHOT. . .., . In the billiard' room) of the Irving club the other day one of the member remarked that he had not had a full night's rest the night before, and com plained of feeling "ail broken up." "I thought you went home early last night," observed another, "with the In tention of getting a good sleep?" "So I did, bub the baby kept me awake an hour." "I wonder why It Is," mused the sec and Irvlnlan, "that an hour's sleep lost on the baby's account Is so much more wearing or a man than three hours- spent at the club with the 'boys' seems to be?" The silence that ensued was so dense that no one could see whether the f sleepy member went, out the door- or made his escape by way of the front window. AN OLD DEED. The following extract from a deed given by Oliver Wendell Holmes was copied from the records at Plttsfieid, Mass., and has probably never before nppeared In print. It describes the land conveyed In the following characteristic manner: "All ofj that lovely and beautiful . combination of land, rocks and water, with the vegetation and other sine cures therewith appertaining, known and admired amongst the family, their servants and neighbors of the party of the first part, by the appellation and romantlo name of "The Skunk Cab bage Lot;" sltuattd In the western part ct the noble town of Plttsfieid, In the distinguished county of Berkshire,, and in the highly honored state of Massa chusetts, the some being and lying in an oblong, restangular, parallelogram- leal sort of a figure or form, and more particularly described and bounded, as follows, to wit: ."Southerly, by that certain high, by, or some other way more or less used by public or private parties, by acci dent, design, or otherwise, In going from some parts of said Plttsfieid to ward Lebanon Springs. "Northerly, by a line opposite there to, as It follows an antiquated and very dilapidated fence. Easterly, by more or less of another venerable fence which is on more or less of an angle to or with said lust described boundary line. "Westerly, by that portion, piece, plot or parcel whereon, now or for merly, we are Informed, once dwelt, either as tenant or. owner thereof, a certain person by the nine of Joshua something, who was renowned as the naval constructor or grand architect of a mill-wheeled, airy-castled boat. "This conveyance Is said to run about 12 rods wide, and about 97 rods long and to Include, probably, from 4 to 10 acres, such as It Is. "Reserving, however, for the benefit of ourselves, our heirs, our assigns, ex ecutors, and administrators forever, rights, as follows: "First, of refusing to pay any more taxes thereon. "Second, of gazing upon, over and across the same. "Third, of going along the same in either way, in, over and across said way aforesaid. "Fourth, of calling upon the neigh bors thereabouts. "Fifth, of enjoying any lawful busi ness or pleasure with them. "Sixth, of making remarks regarding this sale and conveyance. "Seventh, of the right to appeal to congress for special privileges. "Eighth, of anything else which will not Invalidate this instrument." Women on Stats attmni. It is becoming qnite the thing for worn n to be appointed on state boards. Re becca G. Bacon and Mary Hull have been appointed on the Connecticut state board of charities. The Kansas state board of charities recently elected Mrs. Emma Pack, editor of The Fanner's Wife, a member of the board of supervisors of the Topcka insane asylum, and Miss Minnie Wilson and Mina Arlie Randolph members of the board of the Ossawata mie insane asylum. Dr. Alia Kliberg was elected physician to women in the formes institution and Dr. Emily White In the latter. Mrs. A. T. Bliss of Sagi naw boa been elected president of the new board of trustees of the Michigan State Industrial Home For Girls. Women Whlit Flaysn. Ban Francisco women excel in whist playing. There is probably no city in the conn try where the garnets so well played by so many women at in the California metropolis. At tne recent whist con gress held there women were present for the first time as members of various clubs, and a woman, Mrs. Henry Krebs of the San Francisco Whist clnb was elected assistant secretary of the con gress. One of the most prominent male whist clubs has a weekly "ladies' night," to which all lady players are welcome Ban Francisco Examiner. A Woman Editor.
