Arrlvo on tho col um ola. Tlw expected party of Omaha council men a-nd their friends camo down the i-Iver yesterday morning on the fteanv Khlp Columbia, en route to San Fran cIbco, and spent several hour in Right aeelng around town. Tne find place they vlnlted was the postofflve, which was not at the tim open for thu Iran notion of buHlnoHH, but as soon as Port master Hare became iiprlsed of the fact that the strangers were outside, he Invited them In and furnished them with desks, several of them halnj ox pressed a desire to write letters to their friends. To Mr. Hare some of the par ty stated they had been told In Port land that Astoria was only a little fish Ing village, with no hotel accommoda- tlons, and that If they went down on the Telephone according to the original program, they would be compelled 'tp seek hospitality In the homes of some of the fishermen. They expressed sur prise that Astoria had not long ago secured transcontinental railroad con nection, and Inquired particularly about the reasons for the antipathy of Port landers to this city. Many questions were put by the vis itors as to the extent and nature of the resources of the city-and county, und when informed of the magnitude of the Ashing business and the won derful Umber and agricultural resources of the county, all manifested a great de gree of surprise. Mr. Hare happened to have a portion of an old gill net in the postofflce, and with it he explained the manner in which the Royal Chinook was cap tured. The visitors expressed their de termination to . see the canneries In operation at a later date. The scenery was an object of especial delight to all, and they went Into rap- . )el . lots 1, 2, 3, 4, .'. I!. 7, und ''8, block 37, of HnilutUiy IJfiik, Rco-slde. Mary A. Jordan and Win. H. Smith, George Rlnearson and William Burlow for representatives. Resolutions were adopted charging the democrats with the cause of the hard times, and de mandlng a Joint resolution by congress Indorsing the McKlnley bill and Mc Klnley; favoring both gold and silver a, constitutional convention and the Inl- jjjHlve and referendum, and restricting (Orlgn immigration. m !. ' HIS HKART WAS WEAK. Taooma, April 4 M. C. Sullivan, western manager, and one of the three partners In Thlel's detective eeivlce, died here of heart disease (shortly before 10 o'clock. About 8 o'clock Mr. Sullivan had an altercation with Sheriff Mat thews, of this county. Matthews be came angry and slapped Sullivan across the mouth. The latter went to his room somewhat excited, dying about an hour; later. A GOOD THING I f II II lmj':irtCmi:nUh rail ''(UDJlr'h. is always imitated. When told that the Columbia at this city was seven miles wide they began to think their own Missouri was a very unpretentious creek. Inquiries were made about the ap propriation for the Jetty work, and one or two members of the party seemed pretty well Informed as to the 1m provements at the mouth of the river. The fact that a portion of the city was constructed over the river seemed strange to the excursionists after they had seen the possibilities for building on terra flrma, and the opinion pre vailed that the maintenance of dock must be a matter of great expense. "It must cost a great deal," said one, to Keep putting in new 'Btlcks' upon which to build the docks." o "How long do you suppose those piles last?" was the question put In reply. "Probably a year or two," the excur slonlst responded. An Incredulous expression overspread the stranger's countenance when in formed that piles' had been known to last, In a perfect state of preservation, for nearly fifty years. Before leaving the visitors were In formed they could take the night boat upon their return from San Franrlsu In about ten days, and in that wav fhey could ha,ve nni opportunity of seeing at their leisure the different liolnts. On account of the uncertainty about the arrival of the party, no reception committee met them, but they were much pleased with their treatment by the few citizens they met. If they should conclude to remain for a few hours after their return from San Francisco, Mr. Megler will probably convince them not alone that Astoria can furnish hotel accommodations tn strungeig, but that the table will com pare very favorably with that at any hotel they have stopped at during their travels.
