The British bark Holywood entered
at tho custom-house yesterday. She
docked at the bonded warehouse, and than that at any previous democratic

whose name could not be ascertained
had a fistic encounter yesterday morn
ing on Third street. In front of thu Car

(he men agreed to pay all damages, and
consequently no arrests were made.

west coast of Ireland after a voyage
from this port. From the letter It ap
pears that a number of the men on
board were scurvy stricken, and fresh
meats and vegetables were scarce on
board. Some of these were served out
to the men when It became evident that
a change in diet was necessary In or
der to save their lives. The writer of
the letter, a lad a little over 16 years,
states that he was fed on three-quarters
of a pound of biscuit daily for over
three months and a half, and was so en
feebled that on ono occasion he was
washed about In the lee scuppers for
several minutes, unable to rise on ac
count of weakness. What made their
sufferings all the more acute was the
fact that aiter tiio vessel arrived In
Brandon bay the captain went off Into
the country to see a doctor, leaving the
men to their own resources.

The Imposition of fines created al
mcst endless merriment, and the re
ceipts of the lodge were increased to
the tune of $120.
Among the fines imposed were the fol
lowing: A. D. Charlton, for shaving his
whiskers off, $1; C. H. Clute, of Port
land, $1.50, for attending the sociable;
W. L. Robb, for filing complaint against
F. L. Parker, $1, which the latter was
ordered to pay.
E. A. Taylor was fined 50 cents, and
j. w. tiume was mulcted of a similar
sum for lending Mr. Taylor the amount
of the hitter's fine.
S. E. Harris was lined $1.50 for being
a good fellow and $2 added because he
protested.
It cost R. Carruthers 50 cents for tak
ing off his hat. promptly when entering'
the room, and Tom Brice was fined a
similar sum fcr not taking his hat off
on crossing the threshold.
S. S. Gordon was fined $3 for being a
police commissioner, and John Kopp a
similar sum for furnishing beer to the
lodge.
Mark Warren was fined $1 for report
ing that the sandwich committee had
struck, and the members of the com
mittee 60 cents each for striking.
F. W. Overbeck, for allowing a dis
patch to come from Chief Hunt, In Port
land, ordering the arrest of A. D. Charl
ton for shaving off his whiskers, was
fined $1.
Chief Loughery, for arresting Sheriff
Smith, was fined $1, and the sheriff had
to pay $2 for allowing himself to be ar
rested.
State Printer Baker was fined $2 for
having so ably presided at the social
session, and John Fox paid $2 for hav
ing worn a dress suit.
E. C. Hughes paid $1.50 because he
was elected Exalted Ruler, and a num
ber of others paid various sums for vari
ous "offenses."
Altogether the members and their
friends made merry in a manner sel
dom excelled.
