Mr. LaForce visited Colfax, Moscow and Baker City during his trip, and states that he heard many Inquiries as to Astoria's railroad prospects. "It is surprising," said he, "how many people outside the state are Interested in the future of this city, and the belief is gen-i eral that the railroad will be built this year." A runaway horse created a little stir In town on Sunday. De Witt Clinton, the driver, was collecting the malls, and Immediately after reaching and opening the box nt the Occident hotel, the horse made off up Css Ktreot. Reaching Courl Ftreet the animal ran eastward to the Tighe hotel, where he turned down Gen evieve and went at break-neck peed to Second street. He slowed up before reaching the river, and was caught on Flavel's dock. The number of arrests for drunken ness and other petty offenses made dur ing the present month by the police de partment has been but 30. Of these Capt. Hallock is credited with 17. For the corresponding time in 1889 there were 50 arrests, about 40 per cent of which were for smoking opium. In 1890 there were 51 for various offenses, and In 1891 but 13. In April of 1891 there were 39 arrests, of which 23 were for opium smoking. In 1892 there were 52, and in 1893, 30. Vessels have always passed to and from the ocean below Tongue Point by way of the southern channel, which lies in front of Astoria. This channel appears to have deterior ated. Preservation of the capacity of this channel in its former Integrity is regarded as an important feature," etc Observation shows that the ship chan nel in the harbor has deteriorated and is undergoing changes which, unless prompt action be taken by the general government, will result disastrously to the commercial Interests of the city of Astoria. Since the construction of the Columbia river jetty vessels of larger tonnage and deeper draught than for merly enter the river, and It is certainly of paramount Importance that the har bor of Astoria should be protected and Improved In proportion to the magnl tude of the work performed by the gov ernment at the mouth of the river.
