TODAY'S WEATHER. Portland, Ore., March 19. Forecast for Washington and Oregon: - Fair weather; cooler; freBh northerly winds. Minister Willis seems to have resign ed from the business of Inviting scath ing letters frorrt President Dole. Congressman Wilson may not be able to recognize his bill when It gets back to him from the senate. The Infant prodigy Is being dressed In a new suit of clothes. When President Cleveland contem plates the picture of Gladstone retiring with all his honors secure, how muBt he look forward to three years hence with melancholy reflections? Indiana bankers are Justly Jubilant over a decision of the state supreme court that they are not obliged to dis close the names of their depositors. That they should be so required would be an Injustice and unwarrantable Inva sion of private business. Eighteen thousand Canadian women have memorialized the Dominion parlia ment for the right to vote. Whenever woman makes up her mind that she must vote she can and will. Still It la questionable who has the most power, the man who runs things, or the woman who runs the man who runs, things. According) to a recent issue of the London and China Telegraph, the cot ton Interest In Japan la going ahead In a most remarkable way. In 1888 the production of cotton yarns In Japan was less than 1,000.000 pounds weight In 1892 it had risen to more than 84,000,000 pounds. This result Is due, of course, to the cheapness of labor In Japan, which renders the cost of production even less than in India. The figures form, a striking commentary on the de mand among English operatives for shorter hours and larger wages. In face of such competition, Lancashire will be harder put to it than ever. A Troy Times gosslper tells of a Ken tucky maw named You mans, whose 'fWnt" noma la n. rlUrtbUS, He IS known as "Bus" Youmans. The Incl dent recalls the story of a Mr. Rose, who named his daughter Wild. That was a very pretty conceit, but when she grew to maturity she married a gentle man by the name of Cull, producing a combination less satisfactory to the par ent. There la a family named Hoaklns, In Tompkins county. N. Y.. who named the eldest son Socrates,'' pronouncing the word with the accent on the second syllable, so that It rhymed excellently with saleratus. The gentleman still lives and Is known as "Borate." Instead of "Sock." as he ought to be, ... ' J. & Coxey, of Massillon. Ohio, who Is going I i. h - "P.ee Ariuy" of 100.000 men to Washington, says now the march, will start Best Tuesday, and that he will take only P' with him. This decimation of his arm? by the corroding tooth of time, would cause any other man than Coxey to feel a little discouraged. What are men compared with principle? And If the whole of the "Peace Army" should fall to come to the scratch, wouldn't' we sUll have Coxey? The spectacle of Coxey acting as a "Peace Army," and forming hollow squares and thing by himself all the way between Masslllon and Washington, will be enough to bring hope to the heart of the most despon dent patriot. MULTUM IN PARVO. Earneatnegs commands the respect of mankind. John Hall. All human power Is a compound of time and patience. Balzac. Conceit may puff a man up, but can never prop him up. Ruskfn. She was one of those sassy women that knows more In a minute that man knows In seventy hundred and eighty-four years, and she kept It con stantly on display. It was about 10 o'clock in the morning when she bustled Into a family grocery on Third avenue and approached an innocent looking, sandy-haired clerk, with a stub pencil over his ear. "Is there butter In this Jar?" Bhe in quired, tapping the vessel with her toe, "Yes, madam," affirmed the clerk. "I thought so," she said; "I can tell a butter Jar Instinctively." "Yes'm," the clerk acquiesced. "Is It sweet?" "Yes'm." "Where Is It from. ' Western Re serve?" "No'm." "No?" and her feathers drooped a lit tle. "From Michigan, I suppose?" "Yes'm." She smiled with satisfaction. "I thought It must be," she confessed. " 'TIsn't fresh, of course; butter never Is when it Is put up In Jars." "No'm," admitted the clerk. "It wus made last fall." "Goodness me," Bhe exclaimed. "All that time, and you say It Is sweet yet." "Yes'm. We guarantee It." " 'TIsn't worth quite so much os If It was fresh, Is It?" she asked, with a boarding-house accent. "No'm." , "What's the price of It?" "A dollar a gallon, ma' in." She Jumped as If a mouse had bitten her. "A dollar a gallon!" she exclaimed. "I never heard of selling butter by the gallon." "We always sell that kind of butter by the gallon, ma'm," said the clerk with guileless gravity. "What kind of butter is it?" Bhe BBked, In a less confident tone. "Apple butter, ma'm," and the clerk bowed his sandy head and waited for the storm. Detroit Free Tress. THE GENUINE AND THE SHAM. Every good thing has Its host of Imi tators; every genuine article its coun terfeit The imitators always choose the most valuable and popular article to counterfeit, bo that when they claim their shum to be equal, or as good, or the same os "So-and-So's," the public may depend uion It that "So-and-So's" article Is the best of the kind. The sham proves the genuine merit of the thing It copies, and never has this been better Illustrated than by the imitations of Allcock's Porous Plasters. Allcock's Porous Plaster Is the stand ard of excellence the world over, and Its Imitators In their cry that theirs is "as gtHHl as Allcock's are only em phasizing this fact and admitting "All cock's" to be the acme of perfection, which It Is their highest ambition to Imitate. The difference between the genuine and these Imitations, which copy only general appearance, Is as wide as that between copper and gold. The only safe way for purchasers Is to always Insist upon having Allcock's Porous Plasters. They are the only per fect plasters ever produced. THE LAND OF PROMISE Is the mighty West, the land that "tickled with a hoe laughs a hnrvest;" the El Dorado of the miner; the goal of the agricultural emigrant. While it teems with all the elements of wealth and prosperity, Some of the fairest nnd most fruitful portions of It bear a har vest of malaria reaped In Its fullness by those unprotected by a medicinal safeguard. No one seeking or dwelling In K malarial locality Is safe from the scourge without Hostetter's Stomach Hitters. Emigrants, bear this in mind. Commercial trawlers sojourning In ma larious regions should carry a bottle of the Bitters in the traditional gripsack.
